BOSTON -
The Boston University women's soccer team (7-5-0, 2-0-0 AE) extended its winning streak to four games with a 1-0 victory over UMBC (2-8-1, 1-1-0 AE) on Thursday afternoon. It also marked the Terriers' fourth-straight shutout, which ties a program record.
Freshman Kylie Strom scored the game's lone goal in the 45th minute when the UMBC defense failed to clear the ball out of the box. Strom collected the ball and fired it into an open net for her first collegiate tally.
The Terriers maintained a commanding 18-6 shot advantage and put 11 on target, while holding the Retrievers to just one shot on goal. Graduate student Lisa Kevorkian led the way with seven shots - three on goal - while eight other Terriers recorded at least one shot.
UMBC generated some offense in the beginning as it hit the cross bar in the fourth minute, however, BU's stingy defensive line held it without a shot for another 21 minutes before it was able to get two shots off before the end of the stanza. Throughout the first 45 minutes, BU was much more successful in pushing its numbers forward and that resulted in nine shots - including Strom's game-winner.
The second half begin much like the first half did, with a UMBC forward hitting the post five minutes in. The Retrievers were able to get three quick shots within three minutes of each other, but following that initial outburst, BU reclaimed control of the match and outshot UMBC, 8-0, in the final 35 minutes. During that time, Kevorkian and junior Tiya Gallegos forced the Retrievers' defense to make two team saves on the goal line and Lauren Kadet collected four stops.
On Sunday (Oct. 3), the Terriers will face off with Stony Brook at 1 p.m. on Nickerson Field in a rematch of last year's America East semifinals - an overtime BU victory.
