STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Boston University women's basketball team (9-9, 6-0 AE) took down Stony Brook (3-15, 0-6 AE), 82-65, on Thursday evening at Pritchard Gymnasium. Sophomore Chantell Alford scored a season-high 24 points, while junior Alex Young added 16.
The Terriers scored the most points in a game since putting up 83 on Yale back on Nov. 17. After shooting 40.7 percent from the field in the first half, BU came out energized in the second stanza and shot 60.7 percent as Alford and classmate Mo Moran netted 18 of BU's first 23 second-half points.
Alford earned America East Player of the Game honors as she shot 8-for-17 with four treys, six rebounds, five steals, and two assists. Additionally, she was 4-for-6 from the free throw line. Also reaching double figures was Young with 16 points on 4-for-11 shooting and 6-for-7 free throw shooting, Moran with 15 points, and senior Kerry Cashman with 13 points.
BU was 18-for-23 from the free throw line and ended up shooting 50.9 percent for the game from the field. The Terriers up-tempo style frustrated the Seawolves as they scored 12 points on the fastbreak, while SBU was unable to gain any momentum there.
The Terriers got off to shaky start as Stony Brook shot 71.4 percent on 5-for-7 shooting in the first five minutes of the game to take a 10-9 lead heading into the first media time out. After the Seawolves took a five-point lead, 14-9, BU came back to claim a 15-14 advantage as Alford hit a trey and Cashman put one in off her own rebound under the basket at 12:50. The lead was short-lived however as SBU scored the next six points to go ahead 21-15.
After trailing for much of the first half, the Terriers came storming back with a 9-0 run to take a 27-25 advantage at 4:15 with crucial points coming from senior Kat Briggs on a 3-pointer and Cashman on a three-point play.
While Stony Brook hovered around 50.0 percent field goal shooting in the first half, the Terriers' outside game put them ahead as they hit four treys and held the Seawolves without a 3-pointer for the first half. Cashman was crucial in the first half and particularly in the team's comeback as she scored seven points - six coming from three-point plays - to go along with five rebounds, one steal, and one block.
To start the second half, BU came out energized, scoring six straight points to go ahead 41-30 and forcing SBU to burn another timeout just two minutes into the stanza. Through the first five minutes BU outscored Stony Brook, 12-4, to push the lead into double figures, 47-32, at 14:37.
Over the next 10 minutes, BU stretched it to as much as 19 points, 71-52, when junior Caroline Stewart went in for a layup. Down the stretch, the Seawolves chose to foul when they pulled to within 11 points, however, BU went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the last minute and a half to round out the scoring at 82-65.
BU will host three straight home games beginning with Hartford on Sunday (Jan. 23) on Comcast at 2 p.m.
