Five members of the Boston University field hockey team have been named to the 2011 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Northeast All-Region Teams, as announced on Thursday.
Senior Kate Murphy and juniors Jacinda McLeod and Nicole van Oosterom all earned first-team honors while senior Giovanna Monaco and junior Macey Gaumond were selected to the second team.
BU tied for the region lead in both total number of honorees and first-team selections. The last time the Terriers had five players earn all-region accolades was the 2007 season.
This marks the third straight year that McLeod has received all-region honors and the second time in as many years that she has earned a place on the top squad, while van Oosterom has now been a first-team honoree in back-to-back seasons.
This first-ever two-time America East Defensive Player of the Year, McLeod has established herself as one of the top backs in the country and has been named to the America East All-Conference First Team in all three of her seasons thus far at BU.
She was once again a large part of the Terrier offense, ranking second on the team in points (21), goals (8) and assists (5), and was named to the America East All-Championship Team.
Van Oosterom, a two-time first-team all-conference selection and the 2010 America East Midfielder of the Year, turned in yet another strong season for the Terriers. This fall, van Oosterom finished third on the team in both points (16) and goals (6) and was selected to the America East All-Championship Team after recording five points (2g, 1a) in the conference tournament.
Murphy, who will play in this weekend's NFHCA Senior Game, teamed up with McLeod to give BU one of the top backfields in the region. She enjoyed a career year as a senior with 12 points on five goals and two assists and was a member of the America East All-Championship Team. Murphy was named to this year's America East All-Conference First Team after earning second-team honors as a junior.
The team's leader in both points (24) and goals (10), Gaumond developed into a dangerous striker for the Terriers. She had a pair of two-goal games this season and ended the season with at least one point in seven of the last eight games, including goals in both games of the America East Championship. Gaumond was named to this year's America East All-Conference Second Team.
Monaco received all-region recognition after being a strong four-year contributor to the Terriers. This year, Monaco played a huge role in helping BU control the midfield while also adding a goal in a win at UMass. A three-year starter and a member of this year's America East All-Conference Second Team, Monaco tallied 19 points (9g, 1a) in her career.
These five standouts helped the Terriers reach the America East title game for the fifth time in the last seven seasons and earn a final national ranking of 13th, tops among Massachusetts schools and third in New England.
