BOSTON - With a Women's Frozen Four berth on the line, the third-seeded Boston University women's ice hockey team will face off against Mercyhurst in the NCAA quarterfinals on Saturday (March 12) at Walter Brown Arena. Opening faceoff is set at 3 p.m.
The Terriers (25-6-4), who are hosting an NCAA tournament game for the first time in their six-year history, will look to avenge last year's NCAA quarterfinal loss to the Lakers (29-5-0). As the No. 8 seed, BU fell to top-seeded Mercyhurst, 4-1, on March 13, 2010.
BU is 0-1 all-time in the NCAA tournament and will look to secure its first-ever Frozen Four berth.
THE FIELD IS SET
• The 2011 NCAA tournament field was announced on Sunday with three teams from the WCHA, two from Hockey East and ECAC Hockey and one from the CHA.
LOOKING TO MAKE HISTORY
• BU is looking to earn its first-ever trip to the Women’s Frozen Four.
HOCKEY EAST IN THE NCAAs
• Hockey East boasts two teams in the eight-team tournament for the third time in nine years.
• Only three Hockey East schools have advanced to the Frozen Four (Boston College - 2007; New Hampshire - 2006, 2008).
• A Hockey East school has never played in the national championship game.
QUARTERFINALS REMATCH
• In their first appearance in the NCAA tournament, the Terriers lost to top-seeded Mercyhurst, 4-1.
• Junior Tara Watchorn scored the lone BU goal at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
TERRIERS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
• The Terriers are 0-1 all-time in the NCAA tournament, losing to Mercyhurst, 4-1, last year.
• In 2010, BU earned Hockey East’s automatic berth after defeating UConn, 2-1, in overtime of the Hockey East title game.
FAMILIAR FOES
• There will be a lot of familiar faces on both benches in the Terriers’ quarterfinal matchup.
• BU’s Tara Watchorn and Jenelle Kohanchuk played on this year’s Canadian U22 Team with Mercyhurst’s Bailey Bram and Vicki Bendus.
• At the Olympics, freshman Marie-Philip Poulin and graduate student Catherine Ward played alongside Meghan Agosta.
• BU’s Jenn Wakefield played with the three Olympians during the National Team schedule prior to the Olympics.
POSTSEASON AT WALTER BROWN ARENA
• BU is 2-1 at Walter Brown Arena in the postseason.
• Most recently, the Terriers dropped a 4-2 game to Northeastern in the 2011 Hockey East semifinals.
• In previous Hockey East action, BU defeated Northeastern, 2-1, on Feb. 28, 2009 and Boston College, 3-1, on Feb. 28, 2010.
MARK THEM DOWN
• Junior Jenn Wakefield and freshman Marie-Philip Poulin have been constants in the box score all season.
• Wakefield has been held scoreless in just three of her 31 games played. She’s also recorded 15 multi-point games this season.
• Poulin has been held off the scoresheet in just four of her 25 games and has also collected 15 multi-point games.
BEST VS. MERCYHURST
• Senior Jillian Kirchner leads BU with one goal and two assists against the Lakers.
• Junior Jenelle Kohanchuk has recorded two assists and classmate Tara Watchorn and senior Lauren Cherewyk have scored one goal each.
• Senior Holly Lorms and sophomore Jill Cardella have posted one assist each.
ALL-TIME VS. MERCYHURST
• The Terriers are 1-4 all-time against the Lakers, including 1-1 at Walter Brown Arena.
• BU won its last game (3-2) against Mercyhurst at Walter Brown Arena.
SCOUTING MERCYHURST
• Mercyhurst enters the NCAA quarterfinals with a 29-5-0 overall record and a 16-0-0 conference mark.
• Last weekend, the Lakers topped Syracuse, 5-4, to win the CHA title.
• The squad boasts 13 players with at least 10 points and 16 players have scored at least one goal.
• Mercyhurst is led by Meghan Agosta, who was named a finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award. She leads the team in goals (36), assists (48) and points (84).
MERCYHURST VS. HOCKEY EAST
• In 2010-11, the Lakers played two games against Hockey East opponents, sweeping a two-game series with Maine back in October.
BU VS. COLLEGE HOCKEY AMERICA
• The Terriers are 2-0-0 against the CHA this year, sweeping a two-game series over Wayne State on Oct. 15-16.
• In a 7-2 win on Oct. 15, Marie-Philip Poulin scored four goals to tie a BU single-game record.
HOCKEY EAST PLAYOFFS RECAP
• The top-seeded Terriers fell to Northeastern, 4-2, in the Hockey East semifinals on March 5.
• BU had played the Huskies for the fourth time in its last six games.
• Junior Jenn Wakefield, who scored both of BU’s goals, was named to the All-Tournament Team.
TOP OF THE CHARTS
• BU ranks first in the NCAA in penalty kill (.938), seventh in scoring offense (3.51) and scoring defense (1.80) and ninth in power play (.191).
FINISHING STRONG
• After the first period, the women’s ice hockey team has outscored its opponents by a 89-43 margin.
• The Terriers are also 17-2-0 when leading after the first frame.
• Since the start of the 2009-10 season, BU is 35-0-7 when leading after two periods.

• Fourteen Terriers have registered at least 10 points and 17 players have scored at least one goal.
