AMHERST, Mass. - Despite outshooting Massachusetts, 22-3, the No. 20 Boston University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision on Sunday afternoon. The Terriers fall to 5-2-1 on the year, while the Minutewomen improve to 3-2-1.
Sophomores Madison Clemens and Megan McGoldrick led all players with five shots apiece, while senior Brittany Heist and sophomore Kylie Strom fired off three each. The Terriers also forced UMass netminder Emily Cota to make six saves, while BU's Alice Binns (3-1-1) stopped one.
The Terriers came out with guns blazing, as they outshot the Minutewomen, 8-1, in the first 20 minutes. However, UMass lit up the scoreboard at 22:42 with the game winner, as Grace Coombs found the back of the net for the first time this season. Coombs collected a pass from Lauren Skesavage and chipped the ball over Binns from inside the six-yard box.
BU continued to pressure the UMass backline with four more shots before the referee blew the whistle to end the first stanza.
The second half turned chippy, as UMass was charged with seven fouls in a 20-minute period, and BU tried to take advantage by firing off nine more shots. The Terriers' defensive crop also held the Minutewomen without a single shot in the second half. UMass' Emily Cota made three stops in that period to preserve the shutout.
BU also held a commanding 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Terriers will look to bounce back on Wednesday, Sept. 14 when they return to the confines of Nickerson Field for a 7 p.m. start against Harvard.
