Balanced Offensive Attack Leads BU Past Stony Brook, 69-34

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Boston University women's basketball team earned its fourth-straight win with a 69-34 victory over Stony Brook at Pritchard Gym on Saturday afternoon. BU improves to 11-6 on the season and remains undefeated (4-0) in America East play.

For the second-straight game, the Terriers had nine players contribute offensively, as senior Alex Young led the team with 15 points by going 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Junior Chantell Alford was the second player to reach double-digits, as she netted 13 points to go with six assists.

Sophomore Rashidat Agboola nearly had a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds while junior Kristen Sims came off the bench to score nine points. Senior Caroline Stewart chipped in eight points and was second on the team with seven rebounds.

The Terriers shot 43.8 percent (14-of-32) in the first half while the Seawolves connected on just 19.4 percent (6-of-31) of their opportunities. Stony Brook's 15 first-half points marked the third time that the Terriers have held their opponents to less than 20 points in the opening half. It was also the third game in which BU allowed its opponent to make less than 20.0 percent of its field goal attempts.

BU ended the game shooting a season-high 51.8 percent (29-of-56) while Stony Brook shot 23.0 percent (14-of-61). The Terriers scored 18 points off 13 SBU turnovers and out-rebounded the Seawolves, 40-38. It was the second consecutive game in which BU held its opponent to 34 points.

The Terriers opened the game with seven unanswered points to take the lead into the first media timeout. After the break, the Seawolves got their first basket of the afternoon from Whitney Davis. Following a jumper from Alford and a free throw by the Seawolves, BU used a 9-2 run to take a 19-5 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the half.

Stony Brook continued to misfire, as the Terriers earned their largest lead of the half, 31-8, with a fast-break layup from Sims. Stony Brook went on to score seven points before the end of the half, as BU took a 33-14 lead into the break.

Young's fourth three-pointer of the afternoon gave BU a 50-18 lead with 14:40 remaining in the second half, as BU started the second half with a 17-3 run to the first media timeout. Young sank another shot from long-range and Stewart hit a layup before the Seawolves got back on the board with a pair of free throws from Jessica Previlon. The Terriers followed with a 9-4 run to take their largest lead of the afternoon, 65-23, with just over six minutes to play.

With head coach Kelly Greenberg turning to her reserves, Stony Brook out-scored BU 11-4 in the final minutes but the Terriers concluded the game with a 69-34 victory.

BU returns to the Empire State on Monday night, as the Terriers visit Albany. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
