BOSTON - The No. 2 Boston University men's ice hockey team dropped its second contest to Maine in as many nights, as the Black Bears held off the Terriers, 3-1, on Saturday evening at Agganis Arena. BU moves to 15-8-1 overall and 12-6-1 in Hockey East play.
After Maine opened the scoring in the closing seconds of the first period on a wrister from the right circle by freshman John Parker, BU tied it up on a power-play goal by sophomore Garrett Noonan at 2:41 of the second.
The Black Bears (14-8-3, 11-7-2 HEA) regained the lead soon after, however, on junior Nick Pryor's first collegiate goal at the 6-minute mark of the middle stanza.
Maine added an empty-netter by junior Matt Mangene in the closing seconds to seal the victory and a weekend sweep of the Terriers.
Both goaltenders turned in standout performances, as senior Kieran Millan stopped 34 shots for BU and sophomore Dan Sullivan earned the win with a 38-save effort.
Despite being outshot, 21-8, in the opening period, BU held a 39-37 shot advantage for the game. The Terriers went 1-of-5 on the power play and held the Black Bears scoreless on their first seven chances with the man advantage before the late empty-netter came on their eighth and final power play of the evening.
BU, which is now tied with No. 7/8 Boston College for first place in the league standings, will return to action on Friday (Feb. 3) when it travels to face No. 5 Merrimack for a 7 p.m. contest that will be broadcast live on WBIN. The teams have split their two previous meetings this season.
