Women's Swimming & Diving Defeats UMass, 177-118
BOSTON - The Boston University men’s swimming and diving team opened the 2012-13 season with a 182.5-116.5 victory over Massachusetts Saturday afternoon at the Competition Pool. The Terriers claimed 11 victories and tied for first in an event to defeat the Minutemen in the season opener.
Freshman Mun Hon Lee led the team with three wins in his first meet as a Terrier. Lee claimed the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.45 to edge teammate Connor Stuewe, who took second in 50.93. The duo finished in the same order in the 200 backstroke, with Lee claiming first in 1:51.50 and Stuewe in second with a time of 1:52.58.
Lee added a third win in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.46. Sophomore Mario Caballero came in second with a time of 1:54.49 to go with his pair of victories in the 100 breaststroke (57.32) and 200 breaststroke (2:05.43).
Newcomer Tanner Cridland earned a win for BU in the 1,000 freestyle (9:44.12) while sophomore Alec Pokornowski took second (9:44.95). Cridland also picked up a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly (1:56.72) while junior Jeff Thomas took first (1:52.99) followed by sophomore Brandon Funk in second (1:56.59.
Thomas also took first in the 500 freestyle, clocking in at 4:41.70.
Sophomore Cole Puchi finished in a tie with UMass’ Christopher Inglis for the top spot in the 100 freestyle with both swimmers touching the wall in 47.10. Classmate Andy Vazquez was just behind with a time of 47.24. Fellow sophomores Ryan Bach and Funk finished 1-2 in the 100 fly with times of 52.15 and 52.26, respectively.
Junior Jared Scheck earned the best scores for BU in the diving events, accumulating 271.57 points to place third on the 3m board and 243.75 for third on the 1m board.
The Terriers also claimed the top spot in both of the relays with the team of Stuewe, Caballero, Bach and Puchi in the 200 medley relay (1:32.87) and the quartet of Vazquez, Thomas, Puchi and Stuewe in the 400 freestyle relay (3:07.09).
BU returns to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 27, when the Terriers travel to Vestal, N.Y., for a dual meet with Binghamton. The competition is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
