BOSTON - Freshman Danny O'Regan scored the first two goals of his collegiate career and sophomore Cason Hohmann added two late tallies as part of a three-point night to help the No. 13 Boston University men's ice hockey team post a 5-2 victory over Massachusetts on Friday evening at Agganis Arena.

The Terriers never trailed in the contest and improved to 2-1-0 both overall and in Hockey East play. With the loss, the Minutemen moved to 1-2-0 with an 0-2-0 conference mark.

It was a special night at Agganis, as over 75 former players attended the contest and were part of a first-intermission ceremony to honor Jack Parker for his 40 years as head coach of the Terriers. Parker was not on the bench for the game due to a back ailment and watched from the coaches' box.

Freshman Matt O'Connor earned his second win in as many starts thanks to a 28-save performance. For UMass, sophomore Steve Mastalerz posted 20 saves.

After a scoreless first period, senior Wade Megan opened the scoring 51 seconds into the second when he drove in from the left side off a pass by Hohmann and finished in tight on a backhand.

Less than four minutes later, O'Regan doubled the lead when he tipped in a feed from classmate Matt Grzelcyk for his first goal in a BU uniform.

Branden Gracel got UMass on the board at 14:57 of the second, but O'Regan gave the home squad a two-goal lead once again at the 4:33 mark of the third on a 5-on-3 power play following yet another great look by Grzelcyk.

The Minutemen answered with a power-play mark of their own from the stick of Joel Hanley with 10:33 left in regulation get within one at 3-2.

Hohmann wasted little time in dampening the Minutemen's hopes for comeback, as he was able to get the puck past Mastalerz on a power-play rush just 43 seconds after Hanley's tally.

The sophomore put the finishing touches on the victory when he broke up a play at the top of the BU zone and skated in to score on an empty net with 50 seconds left in regulation.

UMass held a 30-25 shot advantage and scored on one of its seven power-play chances. The Terriers went 2-of-5 with the man advantage after scoring zero power-play goals in the first two games of the season.

Grzelcyk and sophomore Alexx Privitera each collected two assists in the victory.

The teams will wrap up their weekend home-and-home series on Saturday (Oct. 27) in Amherst. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
