HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Boston University men's soccer team scored in the 76th minute after receiving a red card but was unable to find the equalizer in a 2-1 defeat at Hofstra on Saturday night.
After defeating its third America East team by a one-goal margin, the Pride improves to 5-2-1, while the Terriers drop to 2-5-2.
Hofstra got on the board first at 23:11 when Joseph Holland rifled a shot from 15 yards just under the crossbar. Thomas Bekas added what proved to be the game inner three minutes into the second half with a shot toward upper left corner.
After the Terriers received a red card in the 57th minute, they rallied back with sophomore Parker Powell heading in his team-leading third goal of the season at 75:28. Junior Anthony Ciccone was credited with his fourth assist of the season and his third of the week after helping on two goals during Tuesday's 4-0 victory over Holy Cross.
BU had a flurry of activity in the 78th minute with Hofstra blocking Ciccone's attempt and forcing sophomore Dominique Badji to send his shot wide after he picked up the rebound.
Despite being down a player, the Terriers later had corner kick opportunities at 79:47 and at 87:39 but were unable to connect. They had eight total shots in the second half after recording just two in the first, as Hofstra finished ahead in attempts, 13-10.
Sophomore Nick Thomson posted one save for the Terriers, while Adam Janowski tallied three for the Pride.
After facing a former league foe in Hofstra, BU will open its final America East schedule against Hartford at Nickerson Field next Saturday (Sept. 29) at 7 p.m.
