BOSTON - The Boston University field hockey team kept its hopes of a Patriot League regular-season title alive on Saturday, posting a 2-0 shutout victory over Bucknell at New Balance Field. Freshman Amanda Cassera and senior Nell Burdis scored goals for the Terriers, who improve to 9-5 overall and 4-1 in League play.
The Bison, who entered the game with a perfect 4-0 conference mark, are now tied with BU and move to 7-7 overall with the loss. American, which faces Bucknell next Saturday, stands alone in first place with a 4-0 record. BU has now secured a spot in the league tournament.
Junior Valentina Cerda Eimbcke stopped all four shots she faced to record her third shutout of the season. Her best play of the day was not a save, but instead an incredible diving tackle on a 1-on-1 in front of the cage in the first half.
Cassera opened the scoring just under four minutes into the game with her team-leading eighth goal of the season. Fellow freshman Taylor Blood assisted on the play.
After taking a 1-0 lead into the half, BU got a two-goal cushion off a corner. Sophomore Rachel Coll received the insert and passed off to senior Ysi Schieb on the right side. Schieb drilled a shot towards the cage and Burdis redirected it to the top left corner of the net for her second goal in as many games. The tally came at the 44:56 mark.
The Terriers' defense was stellar, allowing just five shots all day and only one after halftime.
BU recorded 15 shots and forced Erica Perrine to make eight saves in goal for the Bison. The Terriers earned eight corners while allowing only three.
BU will return to action on Sunday (Oct. 20) when it visits Northeastern for a 2 p.m. contest.
