EASTON, Pa. - Junior Dominique Badji finished with a game-high five shots and redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Matt Gilbert recorded six saves, as the Boston University men's soccer dropped a 2-0 decision at Lafayette on Saturday afternoon.
Facing the Leopards (4-3-6, 2-3-0 PL) for the first time in program history, the Terriers fall to 4-8-1 and 1-4-0 in conference action.
Lafayette entered the contest with five shutouts through 12 games and six total draws, leaving BU with little margin for error. Gilbert earned his first two saves at 6:51 and 19:00, respectively, but got a bad break in the 22nd minute.
With the Leopards pushing the ball up through the midfield, the Terriers' backline moved up yards ahead of the goal box to create the opportunity for an offsides call. Jeff McLaughlin slid behind the defenders to receive Ryan Egan's pass and rifled past a defenseless Gilbert for the 1-0 advantage, as BU looked toward the sideline referee for a raised flag.
Trying to find the equalizer, BU was unable to convert on its first corner kick of the game at 31:46 and freshman David Asbjornsson's attempt was wide at 38:57.
The Terriers received another tough break in the 42nd minute when the referee called BU with a foul outside the box on the left side as the teams battled for the ball. The Leopards took advantage with Tom McCutcheon flicking in the free kick from Bryan White for the 2-0 lead.
In the second half, Nathan McDonald made a great save on a header by Badji at 49:39 and followed with another save on a shot by Asbjornsson at 57:43. Finishing with five saves, McDonald made his last stop with 18 seconds left in regulation on an attempt by sophomore Lucas McBride.
Lafayette led BU in shots, 14-11, and finished with a 5-5 tie in corner kicks. Peter Adubato had a team-high three shots for the Leopards.
The Terriers will next return home to Nickerson Field and host Loyola Maryland on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.
