UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Boston University women’s soccer team was dealt a 1-0 loss by No. 14 Penn State on Friday night at Jeffery Field. BU moves to 2-2-1 on the season while Penn State improves to 3-1-1 following the game.
The Nittany Lions scored the lone goal of the game in the 53rd minute off the foot of Taylor Schram with assists from Mallory Weber and Raquel Rodriguez. With the victory, the Nittany Lions, last year’s Women’s College Cup runner-up, improve to 2-0-0 all-time against the Terriers.
Junior goalkeeper Andrea Green finished the game with two saves while Penn State’s Britt Eckerstrom stopped all three shots she faced.
The Nittany Lions outshot the Terriers, 14-9, but both teams recorded three shots on goal. Penn State had a distinct advantage in corner kicks, as they took five while BU was not awarded a corner kick opportunity throughout the game.
Both teams were assessed a yellow card in the final 10 minutes of the match, with Penn State’s Kori Chapic carded first in the 82nd minute. Senior Emma Clark was then assessed BU’s first yellow card since the 2010 season in the 85th minute.
Clark’s card snapped BU’s streak of 46 consecutive games without receiving a disciplinary card. The Terriers’ last card came against Boston College in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Nov. 12, 2010. Since then, BU was the lone Division I women’s team to play through two entire seasons without receiving any disciplinary cards, red or yellow.
Senior Madison Clemens, the Patriot League preseason Offensive Player of the Year, recorded two shots for the game, including the first test for Eckerstrom in the opening minute. The forward produced the second shot of the match for the Terriers in the 26th minute but sent the ball wide of the net.
Junior Taylor Krebs had another scoring opportunity for the Terriers in the 29th minute but was unable to get the ball past Penn State’s keeper while freshman Erica Kosienski fired the Terriers’ third shot on goal in the 37th minute but Eckerstrom made the stop.
The Nittany Lions only managed one shot on goal in the first half, which came from Tani Costa in the 35th minute, but Green was able to make the save.
After an attempt that went wide to open the second half, Penn State broke the scoreless affair in the 53rd minute with Schram’s goal. Weber and Rodriguez were both credited with assists, as Schram beat Green from six yards out to give the Nittany Lions the 1-0 lead.
The Terriers totaled just three shots on the second half with none of them on target. BU’s best scoring opportunity came in the 74th minute as senior Kylie Strom blasted a shot that hit the post but did not bounce in for the equalizer, as Penn State held on for the 1-0 victory.
BU continues its road trip on Sunday (Sept. 8) when the Terriers travel to Ohio to face Akron for the first time in program history. First kick is set for 12 p.m.
