Box Score
ORONO, Maine - Senior captain Louise Warren scored two goals and three other Terriers had at least two points to help the No. 8 Boston University women's ice hockey team defeat Maine, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena.
BU (16-4-1, 9-1-0 WHEA) scored three times in the second period and twice more in the final frame to seal a season sweep of Maine (2-14-5, 0-8-3 WHEA). The Terriers also improved to 5-0-0 on the road in league play.
Lefort's NCAA-best sixth game-winning goal was also her 17th goal of the year, which is now tied for tops in the nation. She also collected two assists to help extend her point streak to seven games. Warren tallied two goals to improve her point streak to six contests. Freshman Maddie Elia matched Lefort with a goal and two assists for her fourth multi-point game of the season.
Senior Taylor Holze had a goal and an assist while four other Terriers tallied a helper. BU scored its five goals on just 14 shots and had three goals on just five shots in the second stanza.
Senior goaltender Kerrin Sperry was sharp between the pipes for the Terriers and made 31 saves. It was her eight 30-plus save performance of the season. She is 6-1-1 in those starts.
Maine opened the scoring at the 6:03 mark of the first period when Audra Richards lit the lamp. The Black Bears added to their lead just 1:01 into the middle frame when Brianne Kilgour scored.
Nine seconds after Maine made it 2-0, Elia responded for the Terriers. She won a faceoff to Holze, who then dished the puck right back to Elia as she entered the offensive zone. She maneuvered past the defense and beat Meghann Treacy (nine saves) for her sixth goal of the season.
Less than two minutes later, Warren tied the game, 2-2. She won an offensive-zone draw back to freshman Samantha Sutherland and the puck eventually landed on Lefort's stick. Her shot was stopped by Treacy, but Warren capitalized on the rebound. That trio has combined for a goal in each of the last two tilts.
Holze gave the Terriers a 3-2 lead 58 seconds after Warren's strike. Elia collected the puck in the left corner and passed it back to senior Kaleigh Fratkin, who fired a shot on net. Treacy made the save, but the rebound came out to Holze, whose shot found the inside of the left post for her second goal of the season.
A minute after Holze's goal, the Black Bears evened the score at 3-3 on a delayed penalty. The Terriers killed off the ensuing power play, however, one of their four successful kills on the afternoon.
BU took the lead for good 2:07 into the third period. Sophomore Jordan Juron helped junior Sarah Bayersdorfer keep the puck in the Maine zone along the blue line before Bayersdorfer chipped the puck past a defender to create a 2-on-1 situation with Lefort. The junior forward sent the puck towards goal and Lefort redirected it past Treacy.
With just 3:03 remaining in regulation, Warren notched her second goal of the game and 14th of the season. Elia and Lefort were cycling the puck behind the net on a power play before Lefort then found Warren in front. The senior captain finished the play for her first power-play tally of the season.
BU will return to action on Friday night (Jan. 17) when the Terriers travel to Providence. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
