BOSTON -
Freshman Kali Shumock scored the game's lone goal in the 51st minute as the Boston University field hockey team recorded a 1-0 Patriot League victory over visiting Lehigh on Saturday afternoon at New Balance Field.
The Terriers won their third straight game to improve to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Mountain Hawks fall to 4-9 on the year with a 1-3 League mark.
BU used back-to-back corners to record the only goal it would need. On the latter, the play was set up for junior Sofi Laurito at the top of the circle. Her shot was stopped shy of the goal line by a Lehigh defender, but Shumock was at the right post to knock home the loose ball for her second game-winning goal in four days.
Senior goalkeeper Valentina Cerda Eimbcke earned her second shutout of the season but was not forced to make a save
The Terriers held a 13-1 shot advantage and earned six corners on the day and did not allow any on the other end. Julia Ward made five saves in goal for the Mountain Hawks.
BU got off to a slow start and head coach Sally Starr called an early timeout. Late in the first half, the Terriers reeled off three straight shots on goal but settled for a 0-0 draw heading into halftime.
The Terrier defense made sure that one goal would be enough in the rainy contest, as Lehigh did not record a shot in the second half.
BU will return to action on Sunday (Oct. 12) when it wraps up the weekend with a home contest against No. 7 Connecticut. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
