BETHLEHEM, Pa. -
The BU women's soccer team (6-3-3, 2-0-2 PL) couldn't hold on to its first-period lead and settled for a 1-1 tie with Lehigh (4-2-3, 2-0-2 PL) on Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Both teams remained unbeaten in Patriot Legaue play with the result.
After an uneventful start to the game, which featured no shots for over 30 minutes, BU got on the board first when Erica Kosienski, last year's Patriot League Rookie of the Year, scored her first goal of the season.
Ariana Aston took a throw just beyond the midfield line and tossed it to McKenzie Hollenbaugh, who beat two defenders to breakaway down the middle of the field. She passed it up to Kosienski, who stayed onside and then beat four defenders to the ball and shot it far side from the top of the six-yard box to give BU the 1-0 advantage.
The goal, scored in the 31st minute, was the first shot of the game and the first real offensive effort by either team. Seven minutes later Lehigh was dangerously close to a scoring opportunity of its own when Pantaleo got ahead of the BU defense at the top of the 18-yard box but Kai Miller used her speed to prevent her from breaking away and getting any shots off.
The Terriers came roaring back on the other end when Taylor Krebs took a shot from the right side that the Lehigh goalie got a hand on but it hit the crossbar and then the post before popping out where Clare Pleuler was able to get a shot on net that was saved by a defender to prevent BU from gaining a two-goal advantage going into halftime.
After sending two shots wide of the net in the opening minutes of the second half, the Mountain Hawks put together its first attempt on net which would ultimately decide the game in the 66th minute. Also off a throw in, Grace Correll sent a pass into the box which BU tried to defend but ultimately Darby Wegland got her foot on it to send it into the left side of the goal.
Lehigh made another try at Alyssa Parisi, who finished the day with three saves, in similar fashion five minutes later when Correll sent a pass into the box from the right side which Wegland shot at the net but Parisi was able to come out and make the stop to preserve the tie.
BU's only attempt on net for the rest of regulation was off a free kick by Ana Cuffia that was easily grabbed by Lehigh's goalkeeper.
The Mountain Hawks were the only team to make an attempt on net through two periods of overtime when Lehigh again went to Correll and Wegland for the offensive effort. Correll passed to Wegland who was in the box but had to turn as she shot and didn't get much on it so Parisi was there to make the easy save.
Despite outshooting Lehigh 17-8 including a zero-shot first period for the Mountain Hawks, BU was forced to settle for a tie.
The Terriers are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 8 for their non-conference finale at Harvard at 7 p.m.
