PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Boston University field hockey team scored a goal in each half and held off Providence down the stretch to earn a 2-1 victory over the Friars on Wednesday afternoon at Lennon Family Field.

BU, which got goals from freshman Kali Shumock and junior Rachel Coll, improves to 6-5 on the year while Providence falls to 8-5.

Each team recorded just one shot on goal in the opening half, but the Terriers took full advantage of theirs to take a 1-0 lead to get on the scoreboard first.

Off a corner in the 16th minute, Shumock tipped in an offering from junior Sofi Laurito for her second goal of the season.

Just under seven minutes in the second half, BU doubled its lead. At the left post, Coll redirected a pass from sophomore Amanda Cassera at the 41:58 mark.

The Friars earned five corners and put seven shots on goal after halftime, but only one found the back of the cage.

Emma Mackie cut the BU lead to 2-1 off a corner with 5:47 left to play but senior goalkeeper Valentina Cerda Eimbcke made five of her six saves in the second half for the Terriers to help secure the win.

BU will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 11) when it hosts Lehigh for a Patriot League contest at New Balance Field. The game, which will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network, starts at noon.
