ORONO, Maine - Each member of the Terriers' top forward line scored a goal to help the No. 3 Boston University men's ice hockey team post a 3-1 road win over Maine on Friday evening at Alfond Arena.
BU erased an early 1-0 deficit with a power-play, a go-ahead shorthanded tally and a late empty-netter to improve to 6-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 in Hockey East play.
Freshman Jack Eichel and junior Danny O'Regan each recorded a goal and an assist while junior linemate Ahti Oksanen buried his second power-play goal of the season.
In goal, junior Matt O'Connor saved the final 26 shots he faced after senior Connor Leen scored off his own rebound just 1:13 into the contest to give the home team an early lead.
Each team recorded 28 shots on the night as Maine got a 26-save performance from Sean Romeo. The Black Bears fell to 3-7-1 on the year with a 2-3-0 conference mark.
The only goal of the first period came from the Black Bears. Leen took a pass from junior Steven Swavely and skated through the right side. His first shot was stopped by O'Connor but a backhand bid off the rebound went off the BU netminder's glove and in.
BU got an equalizer on a power play at 8:48 of the second. After taking a pass from O'Regan, senior Evan Rodrigues sent a cross-ice pass to Oksanen, who buried a one-timer from the right circle to make it a 1-1 affair.
With the Terriers skating shorthanded late in the middle stanza, Eichel forced a turnover at the top of the BU zone before getting around three Maind defenders with a slick move up the left side to create numbers on the rush. With O'Regan skating hard to the right post, Eichel found him with a pass at the top of the crease and the senior tipped it over Romeo for his sixth goal of the season.
The shorthanded goal took the energy out of the Maine crowd, which was buzzing throughout the first two periods after a pregame ceremony honoring its 1999 national championship squad.
BU played a sound third period on the defensive end and added an empty-net goal by Eichel with 37 seconds remaining to seal the win and improve to 4-0-0 on the road this season.
The Terriers killed off all three of Maine's power plays on the night and went 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
The two teams will meet again next Friday (Nov. 21) at Agganis Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
