Eighteen Terriers Named to NHL Opening-Night Rosters

October 7, 2025

BOSTON - Eighteen former Boston University men's ice hockey standouts have been named to National Hockey League opening-night rosters for the 2025-26 season.

That number is tied for third in all of college hockey, with Terriers skating on 14 different teams. Two of those Terriers, A.J. Greer and Evan Rodrigues, enter the season as a reigning Stanley Cup champion, having won the game's ultimate prize this past June with Florida. A Terrier has won the Stanley Cup in each of the last three seasons.

Three Terriers - Charlie Coyle (Columbus), Matt Grzelcyk (Chicago) and Trevor Zegras (Philadelphia) - will begin the year on new teams. Grzelcyk is one of three Terriers on the Blackhawks, joining Ryan Greene and Alex Vlasic. Greene and his co-captain from last year, Shane Lachance, are two of four Terriers on an opening-night roster that played during Jay Pandolfo's tenure as head coach. The other two, Lane Hutson and Macklin Celebrini, were both finalists for the Calder Trophy last season, which Hutson won.

In addition to the talented Terriers taking the ice this season, an NCAA-leading two alumni will be serving as NHL head coaches. John Hynes returns for his third year with the Minnesota Wild while Mike Sullivan begins his tenure as head coach of the New York Rangers. Two of Sullivan's former teammates, David Quinn and Joe Sacco, have joined him on the Rangers' staff. In addition, BU is one of just two schools (Ferris State) to have an alumnus serve as a head coach in the NHL, AHL and ECHL level. No other school boasts more alumni as head coaches in all those leagues than BU, with two NHL head coaches, three ECHL head coaches and one AHL head coach.

A total of 100 Terriers have played at least one game in the NHL, with Devin Kaplan the most recent to do so when he debuted for the Philadelphia Flyers in April. Lachance has a chance to become the 101st Terrier to play in the NHL if he dresses for the New Jersey Devils' opener against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night.
