BOSTON - The No. 24 Boston University men's soccer team erased a pair of second-half deficits to send the Patriot League title game into overtime, but visiting Bucknell scored early in the extra session to pull off a 3-2 upset of the top-seeded Terriers on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
Junior Lucas McBride made it a 2-2 contest with a goal in the 70th minute and the top-seeded Terriers threatened to take a late lead before regulation expired.
Sebastiaan Blickman, who was named the tournament MVP, scored his second goal of the game just 1:56 into overtime to lift the fifth-seeded Bison to their first Patriot League title since 2010.
BU (12-4-4) suffered its first loss to a Patriot League team since a 1-0 overtime defeat versus Bucknell (10-9-3) in last season's regular-season finale.
The Bison controlled the play for the majority of the opening half and were rewarded when Jesse Klug opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when he tucked a low shot from the top of the box inside the right post.
The Terriers headed into the break with the 1-0 deficit but not before their offense started to come alive in the closing minutes of the first half.
Just 6:06 into the latter half, senior Cameron Souri sent a cross from the right side that was headed in from six yards above the far post by classmate Jordan Barker to knot the score at 1-1.
Bucknell, however, quickly regained the lead, as Blickman redirected a Chris Thorsheim free kick past BU goalkeeper Nick Thomson from the center of the box. The goal came just 2:38 after Barker's marker.
BU used a free kick from the right side to register another equalizer. After freshman Bjarki Benediktsson's attempt was cleared out by the Bison defense, he regained possession and sent the ball to the far post, where McBride headed it high over Bucknell goalkeeper Clarker Fox and just under the crossbar at the 69:34 mark.
Freshman David Amirani gave the Terriers a good chance at a go-ahead goal when he performed a slick move before drawing a foul from just outside the box. The ensuing kick was blocked, however, in the 86th minute.
The Terriers earned their fourth and final corner kick of the afternoon in the 89th minute, but McBride's bicycle attempt on the play sailed high of the goal.
The Bison ended the contest off a set piece in the 92nd minute. From the top of the box, Jack Zollicoffer chipped the ball over Thomson and right to Blickman, who headed it in from four yards out to lift the Bison to the league title and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Bucknell held a 15-12 shot advantage and got a pair of saves from Fox. Thomson made five stops in goal for the Terriers, who held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Souri and fellow seniors Dominique Badji and Kelvin Madzongwe were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
