HARTFORD, Conn. - Junior Ahti Oksanen scored two goals and added an assist to lead the No. 2/3 Boston University men's ice hockey team to a 5-2 road win over Connecticut on Saturday afternoon at the XL Center.
Senior Cason Hohmann, junior Danny O'Regan and sophomore Nick Roberto each found the back of the net for BU, which improves to 8-1-1 overall and 6-1-1 in Hockey East play. The Terriers have already surpassed last year's league win total of five. The Huskies move to 3-6-4 with a 2-3-1 league mark.
The Terriers scored a power-play goal in each of the first two periods before pushing their lead to 3-0 early in the third.
The Huskies put together a rally, however, getting goals 57 seconds apart to make it a one-goal affair with 11:14 left in regulation.
BU's top forward line came through down the stretch as junior Danny O'Regan cashed in on rebound off a shot by freshman Jack Eichel with 2:44 left to create a two-goal cushion.
Oksanen, who assisted on the O'Regan tally, put the finishing touches on the win with an empty netter.
BU, which outshot UConn by a 30-22 tally, got a 20-save performance in goal from junior Matt O'Connor.
Oksanen opened the scoring on the Terriers' first power-play opportunity of the contest. Eichel took a pass from junior captain Matt Grzelcyk and fired a shot from the left circle that was blocked by a UConn defender. The puck popped over to Oksanen on the right side and he buried it 7:28 into the first for his sixth tally of the season.
The visitors used the man advantage to double their lead at the 4:11 mark of the second. From the right point, freshman Brandon Hickey one-timed a pass from classmate Brandon Fortunato. Hohmann tipped it past UConn netminder Rob Nichols at the right post to push the lead to 2-0.
A shot by freshman Chase Phelps at the 2:37 mark of the third went off Roberto's skate and in to up BU's lead to 3-0. It marked the first point of Phelps' collegiate career.
UConn got back into the contest with back-to-back even-strength goals in the third. Cody Sharib ended O'Connor's shutout bid at 7:49 of the third before Corey Ronan added another at 8:46.
BU head coach David Quinn called a timeout following Ronan's marker and the Terriers were in control for the final 11 minutes of regulation, allowing just two shots on the goal during the span.
With under three minutes left, a play off the neutral-zone boards by Oksanen got the puck to Eichel, who got ahead of the UConn defense and nearly scored on Nichols. The result was a wide-open rebound look for O'Regan, who crashed the net and got the key insurance goal.
Off an assist from freshman Brien Diffley, Oksanen capped his three-point day on the empty net to cap his three-point effort.
Nichols made 25 saves for the Huskies, who came up empty on four power-play opportunities. BU scored on two of its six chances with the man advantage.
BU extended its unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1) and Eichel and O'Regan raised their point streaks to 10 and eight games, respectively. Eichel is first Terrier since Nick Bonino in the 2009-10 season to record at least a point in 10 straight games.
The Terriers will return to action on Tuesday (Nov. 25) when they host crosstown rival Harvard. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
