ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--New Mexico's late run helped the Lobos escape the Boston University women's basketball team, 56-49 on Friday night in the first game of the UNM Thanksgiving Tournament. The Terriers will play Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. ET tomorrow.
Sarah Hope matched her career-high with 19 points, going 5-for-8 from beyond the arc and 7-of-10 overall while playing all 40 minutes on Friday night. Mollie McKendrick added eight points late in the game to finish as the team's second-leading scorer.
The Terriers were better from the field, shooting 35.6 (21-59) percent to the Lobos' 31.7 percent (20-63). BU also shot an impressive 41.7 percent (5-12) from long-range and held UNM to just 16.7 percent in 3-point range.
Antiesha Brown led the Lobos with 16 points while Khadijah Shumpert added a near double-double with 12 points and 9 rebounds.
New Mexico got off to an early start, taking a 4-0 lead in the opening minutes and extending it to as much as 10 points throughout the first eight minutes of the contest.
After the 10-point deficit, Hope scored 12 of the Terriers next 14 points within a 14-3 run to find BU's first lead of the game with five minutes to go. The Lobos kept fighting, however, regaining the lead once and tying the game twice before ultimately going into the locker room with a two-point deficit.
The Terriers started the second half strong, leading by as much as five points in the first two minutes of the period. The Lobos wouldn't let up and eventually regained the lead with just under 10 minutes to play and did not give it up for the remainder of the contest.
