BOSTON - With one second remaining in the first overtime, junior Lucas McBride scored the game winner to lift the Boston University men's soccer team past Fordham, 1-0, on Friday night at Nickerson Field. Opening a season with a golden goal for the first time since 2005, the Terriers improve to 1-0-0, while the Rams fall to 0-1-0.

Guided by 30th-year head coach Neil Roberts, BU owned a large advantage in shot attempts, 22-8, but had to wait until 99:59 to get on the scoreboard. The Terriers intercepted a goal kick from Fordham keeper Sean Brailey with 15 seconds left in the middle of the field.

The ball was played to senior Dominique Badji, who then moved up the field and sent a cross toward junior Richie Robinson. The Clemson transfer quickly kicked the ball toward his left to an unmarked McBride, who fired toward the right post for the score.

Senior goalkeeper Nick Thomson needed just one save in overtime to secure the shutout. Anchoring the backline, senior Kelvin Madzongwe and junior Jeroen Blugh helped BU clear five corners as well.

Senior co-captains Badji and Jordan Barker finished with five shots apiece to lead BU. They created the first scoring opportunity in the fourth minute when Barker one-timed a pass back to Badji, who rifled a shot just wide of the right post.

The Terriers pressured Fordham throughout and almost scored when a ball was played from the right side to Badji. He found the back of the net aiming toward the left post, but the goal was nullified by an offsides ruling.

BU had a 9-4 lead in shots after the first half and kept attacking in the second. Freshman David Amirani nailed the crossbar at 55:03 and Badji's header was saved three minutes later. The Terriers had the only two shot attempts in the final five minutes of regulation but neither was on goal.

In overtime, Barker collected a cross at the top of the box and lifted the ball just over the crossbar, which led to Fordham's goal kick and eventual game winner.

The Terriers finished ahead in corners, 6-5, while Brailey tallied five saves for the Rams against Thomson's one. BU will remain at home and next host Iona on Sunday (Aug. 31) at 8 p.m.
