BOSTON - Despite taking a 1-0 lead early in the second half, the No. 20 Boston University field hockey team (4-4) dropped a 2-1 decision with cross-town rival Northeastern on Friday night at New Balance Field. The Huskies (7-2) tied the game midway through the second half and then won it on a penalty stroke with 10 minutes left in the game.

Neither team held much of an advantage throughout the first half though each team had scoring opportunities off of penalty corners, with BU awarded three and Northeastern given two in the period. All three of the Huskies tries on goal in the first stanza came off penalty corners, all of which were stopped by senior goalkeeper Valentina Cerda Eimbcke, who finished with five saves on the night.

The Terriers only got one shot off throughout the first half, which was on a penalty corner but Sofi Laurito's attempt was blocked by a NU defender. The two teams went into halftime at a 0-0 stalemate.

BU was the first to score in the match to take a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute. Laurito brought the ball into the circle and took a hard shot from the left side that bounced high off the goalies pads. Taylor Blood was able to get her stick on it and hit it down into the goal to give the Terriers the advantage.

Northeastern didn't waste much time answering, and scored the equalizer in the 53rd minute when Vanessa Pryor beat the BU defense into the circle and passed to Natalie Stewart, who flicked it up into the back of the netting to make it even at 1-1.

In the 60th minute the Huskies were awarded a penalty stroke and Jessica Unger sent a straight shot past Cerda Eimbcke to take the 2-1 advantage and eventual win.

BU was awarded three penalty corners in the final 10 minutes but couldn't capitalize on any of them and settled for a 2-1 loss.

The Terriers are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 4 when they visit Bucknell for an 11 a.m. match in Lewisburg, Pa.
