LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Playing its third game in six days, the No. 23 Boston University men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision at Siena on Wednesday afternoon. Unable to find the equalizer after allowing their first goal of the season in the 27th minute, the Terriers fall to 2-1-0, while the Saints remain undefeated at 2-0-0 behind their second shutout.
"I thought the first half, we obviously didn't play well," said head coach Neil Roberts. "We were slow and didn't pressure the midfield like we did in the first two games. That said, we had an excellent chance to go up 1-0 off a breakway early in the game, and we played better in the second half. The guys just need to learn to take advantage of the opportunities when they present themselves."
Averaging 23.5 shots in the first two contests, the Terriers attempted the first three shots with senior Dominique Badji going wide at 2:42 to start the game. Junior Mac McGuire's shot was stopped at 11:36 by Josh Weiss, who finished with three saves for the Saints, and freshman Adam Sheikali went high over the net following a corner at 16:51.
BU would not get another opportunity the rest of the half, and Siena began to apply pressure with shots on goal at 23:03 and 24:44 against senior Nick Thomson. Two minutes later, Siena's Tom Allen curled a corner into the box for Alexander Tejera to head in for the 1-0 advantage.
Siena entered the locker room with a 5-3 advantage in shots and 6-2 lead in corners. The Terriers brought more energy in the second half and doubled their shot attempts but their efforts were undone by 11 fouls.
During the final 10 minutes of action, BU frantically looked to get on the board. Senior Kelvin Madzongwe's header was saved at 81:01. Two minutes later, sophomore Elliot Maker came down the right side to draw the goalie out. He popped the ball over Weiss, but a defender was in position to clear it away for the team save.
Badji finished with a game-high four shot attempts with his final two blocked at 84:43 and 89:42, respectively. Thomson had three saves in the loss, as both teams tallied nine shot attempts apiece. Siena recorded a 9-3 advantage in corners and only committed eight fouls against BU's 21.
Unable to open a season with three straight shutouts for the first time in program history, the Terriers will look to bounce back when they host Ivy League rival Brown on Sunday (Sept. 7) at 7 p.m.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early starting at 6 p.m. in Braves Plaza for the start of the eighth annual Terrier Tailgate, which will feature free food, Rhett sunglasses and music.
