BOSTON - A second-half surge by Lehigh dashed the Boston University's strong performance on Saturday afternoon and the Terriers dropped a 78-71 decision to the Mountain Hawks in Case Gym.
Meghan Green scored a game-leading 23 points including 15 in the second half but her career-high performance was not enough to stop Lehigh. Green's point total was also the most a BU player has scored in a game this season.
Mollie McKendrick also had an impressive performance, scoring 17 points, the most she has tallied since she scored the same amount against New Hampshire on Dec. 3. Kara Sheftic rounded out double-digit scorers with 10 points.
The Terriers had one of its best shooting performances of the season against the Mountain Hawks, going 46 percent from the floor including a 50 percent first half performance. BU has only shot better in one other game this season when the Terriers finished with a .480 mark against Yale.
For the second game in a row, BU held one of the top scoring offenses in the league to well under their average. Lehigh, who came into the game shooting 44.2 percent overall, the second-highest mark in the conference, was held to 37.7 percent from the field including a 30.8 percent performance in the first half.
Fouls were the Achilles heel for the Terriers, who allowed the Mountain Hawks to go to the line 41 times over the course of the game. Lehigh scored 33 points from the foul line while BU notched just nine from the charity stripe.
Lehigh got off to a fast start but pressure in the paint by Sheftic kept the Terriers in the game as the freshman scored BU's first six points of the contest. The Terriers fought to keep up with the Mountain Hawks, keeping them within five points for the first 10 minutes of the game.
Lehigh made a run midway through the period, however, scoring five straight to gain its largest lead of the half, 20-14. BU put a stop to their momentum, however, and scored the next five points to make it a one-point game.
It took five more minutes for the Terriers to find their first lead of the game, one that they would have to fight to keep for the remainder of the half, but BU persevered and went into the locker room with a 38-37 lead, just the sixth time this season the Terriers have had an advantage at halftime.
BU held its lead for the first five minutes of the second half but Lehigh began to fight back, regaining the lead after a 7-0 run. The lead was exchanged two more times and the game was tied four times but, with nine minutes left in the game, Lehigh took the lead for the final time. From there the Mountain Hawks built on its advantage until they reached their largest lead of the game, 75-65 with less than two minutes to play.
The 10-point deficit was too much for the Terriers to overcome and they settled for a 78-71 loss.
BU hits the road for a contest at Navy on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m.
