PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Despite owning an eight-shot advantage, the Boston University men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at Brown in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night. With their six-game unbeaten streak snapped, the Terriers fall to 8-3-1, while the Bears improve to 6-4-1.
Brown played as many six guys in the back and relied on a successful counter attack in the first half along with a costly BU turnover in the second to hand the Terriers their first shutout loss of the season. BU last opened a season 11 or more games without being blanked in 1968.
The Bears struck first in the 12th minute when Matthew Chow fired a blast past junior keeper Matt Gilbert. They played a long ball from near midfield toward Josh Butler on the right side who with the quick touch of Will Cross inside the box placed it at the feet of Chow on the other end for the shot attempt.
BU finished the half strong with six shots in the final 19 minutes, but the Bears' backline blocked four of them. Brown owned a 1-0 lead at the half with the Terriers ahead in shots, 8-6.
The Terriers kept the pressure high on Brown to start the second with junior Mark Wadid's attempt going just wide at 46:11. Sophomore Anthony Viteri rifled an attempt in the 54th minute from the top of the box. Keeper Erik Hanson made the save but lost the rebound at the feet of junior Felix De Bona, who was pressured into making a quick shot back at the goalie for a second save.
Hanson was aided by the post in the 61st minute on another Viteri attempt and finished with six saves against Gilbert's five stops.
In the 65th minute, the BU backline turned the ball over to Christian Rodriguez. He centered it from the right side to Nate Pomeroy, who maneuvered around a defender and fired a shot past a defenseless Gilbert for the 2-0 advantage.
Hanson stopped three more attempts in the final 25 minutes and watched his backline thwart four others to preserve the victory. BU finished with a 19-11 lead in shots and 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The Terriers will next resume the Patriot League schedule at Lafayette on Saturday (Oct. 17) with action set for 1 p.m. BU is currently riding a 13-game unbeaten streak in conference regular season games.
