BOSTON -
Two second half goals put the only blemish on the Boston University women's soccer team's home record as Harvard came away with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday night at Nickerson Field.
The loss snapped a seven-game unbeaten streak including four straight wins at home for the Terriers. It was also BU's first loss to the Crimson in seven seasons, ending an eight-game undefeated stretch.
Prior to kickoff, the BU seniors honored their favorite professors and presented them with a certificate. All seven seniors invited faculty to be recognized before the match.
BU started the game strong and didn't allow a single Crimson shot until the 35th minute. During that time, BU tallied seven attempts including a goal and a shot by Jenna Fisher that hit the crossbar and narrowly missed going into the net.
Christina Wakefield got the Terriers on the board early when BU used a set piece to take a 1-0 advantage. In exactly the same fashion as the team's first goal on Saturday, Rachel Bloznalis served a free kick from 25-yards out, which Wakefield headed into the net in the ninth minute to put the Terriers on top.
The Crimson's usual starters came off the bench in the 32nd minute, however, and the fresh legs caught BU off guard. Harvard began to set the tempo for the remainder of the game and the Terriers struggled to regain their footing.
Despite an advantage at the start of the half, the Crimson retained control of the ball and netted the game-tying goal in the 60th minute. Margaret Purce, who was problematic for the Terriers once she entered the contest late in the first half, found her chance when Rachel Garcia sent a through ball up and to Purce's feet. The speedy forward beat two defenders and Bridget Conway, BU's second-half net-minder, to make it even at 1-1.
The Crimson kept the pressure on and less than four minutes later scored the game-winner. Garcia did it alone this time, collecting a ball in traffic and taking a turning shot from 25-yards out that got past Conway.
Harvard did not relent for the remainder of the contest and tested Conway three more times but the sophomore keeper made the stops on each attempt.
It was a tale of two halves on the stat sheet with BU outshooting Harvard 10-2 during the first stanza and the Crimson outshooting the Terriers 12-3 in the second. BU also got the advantage on corners during the opening half, 3-0, while Harvard had six chances to the Terriers' one in the second.
Alyssa Parisi started in net for the Terriers and made two saves while not allowing any goals while Lizzie Durack, who started for the Crimson, made two saves and allowed one BU score.
The second half goalies consisted of Conway for BU, who made four stops, and Danielle Etzel for Harvard, who made one save.
The Terriers are back in action on Saturday when they head to Lafayette for a 1 p.m. kick. The game is set to air on the Patriot League Network.
