BOSTON - Boosted by a four-goal first period, the No. 4 Boston University men's ice hockey team rolled past Northeastern, 6-1, on Saturday night at Matthews Arena to clinch the Hockey East regular-season title and the top seed in the upcoming league tournament.

Junior Ahti Oksanen set a career high in points with four (2g, 2a) while classmate Matt Grzelcyk (1g, 2a) and freshman Jack Eichel (2g, 1a) each had a three-point night. Junior Danny O'Regan had a goal, which was his 100th career point, and added an assist.

BU finishes the regular season with a record of 21-7-5 overall and 14-5-3 in Hockey East play. The Terriers will face the lowest remaining seed in the league quarterfinals beginning on Friday, March 13, at Agganis Arena.

After coming up short in three straight home games with the league's regular-season trophy in the building, the Terriers continued their stellar road play to finally get their hands on the hardware for the first time since 2009. BU went 9-1-1 on the road in league play.

The Terriers jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a trio of goals in a span of under six minutes in the first period. Eichel opened the scoring at 8:04 with a shorthanded goal and Oksanen made it a 2-0 lead at 11:34.

O'Regan reached the century mark on a power play just over two minutes later when he potted his 19th tally of the year on assists from Oksanen and senior Evan Rodrigues.

Junior Kevin Roy got the Huskies on the board at 15:45, but BU responded just 26 seconds later when Grzelcyk buried a shot. Rodrigues picked up his second assist of the night and freshman Brandon Fortunato also earned a helper. That tally gave the visitors a 4-1 lead entering the first intermission.

Oksanen scored his league-leading 22nd goal late in the second period on a power play to push the lead to 5-1 before Eichel put the finishing touches on the victory on another man-upgoal with 1:38 left in regulation.

Junior Matt O'Connor earned the win in goal, making 24 saves before senior Anthony Moccia played the final 3:19 in his first appearance of the season.

BU held a 35-25 shot advantage and went 3-for-8 on the power play while killing off all five of Northeastern's chances with the man advantage.

This is the ninth time the Terriers have claimed the Hockey East regular-season title. After winning five straight from 1994-1998, they also won the crown in 2000, 2006 and 2009.
