BOSTON, Mass. - Led by Corrine Williams' career day and Mollie McKendrick's double-double, the Boston University women's basketball team came back from a 13-point first half deficit and claimed a 56-49 victory over Lafayette on Saturday afternoon in Case Gym.
Williams posted career highs in points (12), rebounds (8) and steals (3) against the Leopards while McKendrick led the team with 16 points, 13 of which came in the second half, and 11 rebounds. Troi Melton also reached double-digit scoring with 10 points, all scored in the second half.
The Terriers shot 58.3 percent (14-24) in the second half after shooting under 20 percent in the first. Lafayette was held to 26 percent overall in the first half and 33 percent in the second half, going 18-of-60 from the field over the course of the game.
The first half was a defensive struggle, ending in a 19-13 Lafayette advantage. The Terriers matched their season-high blocked shots in the first 20 minutes of the game, swatting six Leopard balls. BU also tallied six steals in the first half, though Lafayette notched nine takeaways, leading to 14 turnovers apiece in the opening stanza.
BU couldn't capitalize on any of its possessions to start the game and Lafayette quickly jumped out to an 8-1 lead within the first three minutes. Neither team was able to score for the ensuing six minutes until the Leopards hit a three-pointer to gain a double-digit lead.
The Terriers scored its first basket of the game nearly 10 minutes into the contest and from there went on a 12-6 run to close out the half.
The Leopards did not relent to start the second period, taking back a double-digit lead less than four minutes into the half but BU answered with 13 unanswered points to take its first and last lead of the contest.
Erin Bayram, who saw her first minutes in nine contests and finished with a career-high four points and five rebounds, sank two free throws to put the Terriers on top midway through the second half.
Thanks to eight points in four minutes by McKendrick, BU found its largest lead of the contest, eight points, with less than seven minutes remaining in the game. The Leopards brought the game within two points on two occasions, including with 22 seconds left, but the Terriers persevered and came away with a 56-49 victory.
Boston U. is back in action on Wednesday when the Terriers travel to Colgate for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Raiders.
