MANCHESTER, N.H. - Junior Danny O'Regan scored 7:27 into overtime to lift the Boston University men's ice hockey team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Yale in the opening game of the NCAA Northeast Regional on Friday afternoon at Verizon Wirless Arena.

The Terriers will face Minnesota Duluth - a 4-1 winner over Minnesota in Friday's second game - on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. with a spot in the Frozen Four at TD Garden on the line.

Down 1-0 after two periods, the Terriers did not get on the board until the 49th minute of play. Junior Ahti Oksanen ended the scoring drought at 8:21 of the third and senior Evan Rodrigues gave BU a 2-1 lead less than three minutes later.

Yale sent the game to overtime, however, as Frankie DiChiara potted a wrister with 6:48 left in regulation.

Rodrigues drew a Yale penalty in the closing seconds of regulation to give the Terriers a power-play chance to start the extra session.

Despite coming up empty for the seventh time with a man advantage, BU continued to pressure the Bulldogs and sophomore goaltender Alex Lyon.

A lengthy possession in the Yale zone resulted in the winner, as O'Regan elevated a rebound over Lyon from below the left circle on assists from freshman Jack Eichel and Rodrigues. O'Regan and Rodrigues each tallied a goal and an assist in the win.

The Terriers got a 21-save performance in goal from junior Matt O'Connor and peppered Lyon with 42 shots. BU held a 20-4 shot advantage after the second period.

After a scoreless first period, Nate Repensky opened the scoring for the Bullodgs on a power play. The rookie flung a wrister from the high slot and the puck went off a BU defender and in at the 13:19 mark.

Yale's top-ranked defense was as good as advertised for the first two periods. BU finally got on the board when a failed clear by the Bulldogs resulted in the puck finding Oksanen's stick in the center slot. With a lot of net to work with, the junior buried his 24th goal of the season, tying him with Eichel for the team lead.

Soon after, Rodrigues and O'Regan teamed up to suddenly give the Terriers the lead. Off a rush, Rodrigues snuck the puck underneath Lyon off a shot near the left boards to make it a 2-1 contest at 11:20 of the third.

The lead was short lived, however, as DiChiara converted from the inner edge of the right circle 112 seconds after Rodrigues' go-ahead tally.

BU got its seventh and final power-play chance with 10 seconds left in regulation and nearly avoided overtime. A shot by O'Regan went off Lyon's shoulder and then the crossbar right before the horn sounded.

O'Regan would have to wait for a game-winner but it was worth it. A shot by Eichel from the right point was stopped by Lyon but the rebound caromed right to O'Regan at the foot of the left circle, and the junior beat Lyon high to give the Terriers their sixth overtime win of the season, setting a new school record.
