The No. 7 Boston University men's varsity eight boat defeated rival Northeastern on Sunday morning, taking home the Arlett Cup for the first time since 2011. The Terriers defeated the Huskies by 1 tenth of a second in a battle that highlighted a very exciting day of close races on the Charles River.

The V8 race, originally scheduled for Saturday but postponed due to high winds, was a back and forth classic that wasn't determined until the final strokes. Racing under good conditions and coxed by senior Lauren Harvey and stroked by junior Vass Ragoussis, the BU V8 trailed slightly down the stretch but pulled even and then ahead over the last 100 meters to take the race by 2 feet.

"That was some of the toughest racing I've seen on this river in a long time," said head men's rowing coach Tom Bohrer after the race. "I know that BU and Northeastern have always had great races but today we had three races with a total difference of maybe half a second. It was just incredible, good, hard racing today."

The second varsity eight race was another tight contest that came right down to the last few meters. Coxed by sophomore Carly Skehan and stroked by senior Gregor Dierks, the 2V left the starting blocks at a lower cadence compared to NU and was down about half a length. The Terriers stayed composed and were inching back stroke by stroke after the 1000 meter mark but fell a half a deck short of Northeastern who finished with a time of 6:13.00 to BU's 6:13.50.

Not wanting to be left out of the drama, the close races continued when the third varsity eight boats faced off in the final race of the day. Coxed by freshman MacKenzie Hart and stroked by junior Drew Miller, the Terriers 3V and Huskies appeared to come across the line dead even while the official time had Northeastern winning it 6:20.10 to 6:20.23.

The morning began with fours racing and the Terriers 4VA boat winning by the biggest margin of the day. Coxed by freshman Justin Goucher and stroked by junior Rajagopal Srinivas, the Terriers finished with a time of 7:02.50, ahead of NU's 4VA by 4.4 seconds. The BU 4VB finished with a time of 7:22.10 while the 5V4 had a time of 7:29.40.

The rivalry between BU and Northeastern dates back to their first meeting in 1966 with Arlett Cup being created in 1982. The Terriers claimed the cup this year for the first time since 2011 after some very tight duel racing with NU in the recent years.

The Terriers will race again at home next weekend against Dartmouth and Rutgers for the Bill Cup on April 18.
