The Boston University men's ice hockey team celebrated its outstanding 2014-15 season on Friday evening at the program's annual Friends of BU Hockey banquet at George Sherman Union.
Junior captain Matt Grzelcyk announced that he will return for his senior season and he will again captain the squad in 2015-16 along with newly appointed assistant captains Jack Eichel, Matt Lane and Danny O'Regan.
Senior Cason Hohmann had a big night on Friday, winning the Friends Albert Sidd Unsung Hero Award and the Iron Terrier Award (strength & conditioning) in addition to being the co-recipient of the Bennett McInnis Award for Spirit along with graduate student Anthony Moccia, who was a repeat winner.
Eichel was named the George V. Brown Most Valuable Player and also took home the Ed Carpenter Award, given to the team's top point scorer.
Freshman defenseman Brien Diffley was named the Most Improved Player while junior Matt O'Connor and Grzelcyk were awarded the Regina Eilberg and Clifford P. Fitzgerald Scholarships, respectively. The Eilberg goes to the team's top scholar athlete and the Fitzgerald is presented to the outstanding rising junior or senior defenseman.
Over 250 were in attendance at the banquet to honor a team that captured the Hockey East regular-season and tournament titles in addition to the Beanpot before advancing to the NCAA Frozen Four, where it finished as the national runner-up.
The team had the biggest turnaround in program history, winning 28 games after only earning 10 during the 2013-14 campaign. It marked the fifth-largest turnaround in NCAA hockey history.
