ORONO, Maine -
Freshman Ally Hammel scored her first two goals of her collegiate career to help the No. 20 Boston University field hockey team roll to a 6-3 victory over Hofstra on Saturday at the UMaine Field Hockey Complex.
The Terriers, who improved to 2-1 on the year, jumped out to a 4-0 lead and were up by a score of 6-1 before the Pride tacked on a pair of late goals. The six goals were the most by BU in a game since Oct. 27, 2012, in a 6-2 triumph over Fairfield that was the 400th win of head coach Sally Starr's Hall of Fame career.
Freshman Grace Boston and juniors Amanda Cassera, Bea Baumberger Altirriba and Hester van der Laan all scored for the Terriers and van der Laan added two assists for a four-point afternoon.
Cassera gave BU a lead it would never relinquish in the ninth minute when she scored her first goal of the year off an assist from Bea Baumberger Altirriba.
Less than five minutes later, Baumberger Altirriba scored a goal of her own with an assist from van der Laan to make it a 2-0 contest.
Sophomore Grace Boston pushed the lead to 3-0 at the 26:31 mark and Hammel added her first collegiate goal just over three minutes later.
Hofstra (2-2) got on the board with 2:02 left in the first half to cut the BU lead to 4-1, but the Terriers wasted little time to reestablish a four-goal lead in the second half. Hammel added another off helpers from van der Laan and junior Taylor Blood just 1:01 after halftime.
BU pushed its lead to 6-1 at the 45:16 mark when van der Laan notched her second goal of the year off a penalty stroke.
BU held a commanding 20-9 shot advantage, including a 17-6 margin in shots on goal, and earned nine corners while allowing seven. Junior Cammy Jensen made three saves to pick up the win in goal. Hofstra got an 11-save performance from Carys Swan.
The Terriers will complete their weekend in Maine on Monday (Sept. 7) when they take on the host Black Bears at 1 p.m. Maine is 3-0 on the young season.
