BU Goal Videos: Grzelcyk | Oksanen - 1 / 2 | Forsbacka Karlsson | Moran
ORONO, Maine - Senior Ahti Oksanen scored two goals and added two assists to help the No. 11 Boston University men's ice hockey team earn a 5-2 road victory over Maine on Friday night at Alfond Arena in the opener of a weekend home-and-home series.
Oksanen matched his career high with the four-point performance and classmate Sean Maguire turned in another strong effort in goal, making 32 saves. Fellow seniors Matt Grzelcyk and Mike Moran each scored a goal and freshman Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson also found the back of the net.
BU improves to 12-7-4 overall and 6-4-3 in Hockey East play while the Black Bears fall to 5-14-6 with a 2-7-2 conference mark. The win was the 50th in head coach David Quinn's career at BU.
The Terriers never trailed in the contest. Grzelcyk scored the lone goal of the opening period at 14:19 when his shot from above the left circle got past Maine netminder Matt Morris thanks to a good screen by Forsbacka Karlsson. Senior Danny O'Regan and freshman Ryan Cloonan assisted on the tally.
The lead was doubled early in the second when Oksanen tucked the puck inside the left post at 4:18 thanks to the first of three assists on the night by freshman Jordan Greenway.
Maine, which went 2-of-3 on the power play, got back within a goal when Cam Brown scored on the man advantage at 6:25 of the middle period.
The Terriers reestablished a two-goal cushion at 12:15 of the second when Moran notched his first of the year. Following a drop pass by Greenway, the senior centerman got a touch on the puck and got Morris out of position before converting from the low slot.
Just 51 seconds into the third period, Forsbacka Karlsson registered his seventh tally of the season with an effort from just outside the right crease. Sophomore Brandon Fortunato and Oksanen picked up assists on the play, which made the score 3-1 in favor of the visitors.
The Black Bears got some late hope via another power-play marker with 2:59 to play but Oksanen competed his four-point night just 24 seconds later with his team-leading 13th goal.
Morris made 29 saves for Maine, which successfully killed off all four of the Terriers' power plays on the night.
The two teams will wrap up their weekend series on Saturday (Jan. 23) at Agganis Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
