Second-Half Surge Propels Eagles Past BU, 2-0

BOSTON – Despite senior Matt Gilbert tying a career high with 10 saves, the Boston University men's soccer team had its four-game home win streak snapped by Patriot League preseason favorite American, 2-0, on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams were scoreless through the first half with American owning a 9-4 advantage in shot attempts. Both freshman Matt McDonnell and senior Felix De Bona were inches wide of the left post in the 10th and 23rd minutes, respectively.
  • Panos Nakhid put the Eagles in the lead for good by scoring at 49:25 on a low cross from Kibu Mbaluku.
  • Nakhid earned another point when he played the ball up to Joe Iraola, who netted his sixth goal of the season at 70:08 with a chip shot past Gilbert during a counter attack.
  • Lucas Belanger required just one save in the first half to claim the shutout.
GAME NOTES
  • The Eagles outshot the Terriers, 23-5, and became the first opponent to blank BU this season.
  • American also finished with a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks to improve to 3-1-1 all-time against the Terriers.
NEXT UP: COLGATE 
  • The Terriers will conclude their two-game homestand on Wednesday (Oct. 5) against Colgate at 7 p.m.
  • Last year, the Raiders edged BU by one point in the conference regular season standings despite falling at home in overtime to the Terriers, 1-0.
