West Windsor, N.J. - The Boston University men's rowing team will compete in the 114th IRA National Championship Regatta beginning Friday, June 3, on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. The Terriers will send four boats to compete against a field of 24 schools competing for a national title over a three-day period.
Â
"Our team is excited about the IRA regatta. This is our national championship and an entire year of training will culminate over three days of racing," said men's head rowing coach
Thomas Bohrer. "Racing is going to be fierce in all events. Every team is looking to finish as high as they can in the regatta. Right now we are focused on the heats on Friday and making it to the semi-finals on Saturday."
Â
The Terriers varsity eight boat is seeded No. 8 after going 6-1 during its dual season with the only loss coming against No. 5 ranked Brown. The V8 will compete in the first heat race of the regatta at 8:30 a.m. on Friday when they take on No. 1 Yale, No. 17 Florida Tech, No. 9 Northeastern, No. 16 Navy and No. 24 Oklahoma City University.
Â
The top two boats of each heat race advance directly to the semifinals on Saturday, while all other boats will try and advance by competing in the repechage on Friday afternoon.
Â
Coming off a bronze medal performance at the Eastern Sprints, the Terriers' second varsity eight boat is seeded No. 5 and will compete in its heat race at 10 a.m. against No. 12 Syracuse, No. 4 Princeton and No. 13 Navy with the top 2 boats advancing directly to the semis.
Â
BU's third varsity eight boat is seeded 7th and will compete at 10:10 a.m. against No. 1 Washington, No. 6 Cornell, No. 12 Syracuse and 13 Oregon State.
Â
The Terriers' varsity four boat will also be competing over the weekend with their heat race scheduled to begin at 10:50 a.m. on Friday. The V4 competition will not be part of the overall IRA team point scoring competition.
Â
The Terriers are coming off an excellent performance at the Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Mass. on May 15, when they advanced all five boats to the grand finals and won two bronze medals.
Â
BU will look to build on last year's strong performance at the IRAs when their 2V8 boat won a bronze medal, the program's first ever medal in eights racing at the IRAs, and finished 7th overall in team points.
"With the last week of the season upon us, it has been a pleasure working with the men and women on this team," added Bohrer. "They have worked hard all year both on and off the water. I would be extremely happy to see all of them feel like they had the best racing of their careers this weekend."
