DURHAM, N.H. - The 17th-ranked Boston University field hockey team has an early opportunity to take home a trophy as the Terriers will face New Hampshire in the championship game of the Wildcat Classic on Sunday (Aug. 28) at 2 p.m.
BU opened its season with a 2-1 victory over No. 16 Northwestern on Friday in the opening round of the tournament. UNH also earned a 2-1 win as the host squad edged Massachusetts in overtime to advance to the title match.
The Terriers hold a 20-18-3 advantage in 41 all-time meetings with the Wildcats and opened last season with a 4-3 home win over UNH in the Tri-Conference Cup, which turned into the Wildcat Classic this year.
On Friday, junior
Allie Renzi was the offensive spark for BU, registering her first collegiate goal before assisting on senior
Amanda Cassera's 30th career goal to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead. Thanks in large part to senior
Cammy Jensen's nine saves, BU held off Northwestern down the stretch to secure the season-opening victory.
For UNH, senior Lindsey Nerbonne picked right up where she left off last season, scoring both goals against the Minutewomen on Friday including the the overtime winner. She led last year's Wildcat squad in both goals (12) and points (26). Junior Gianna Bensaia is another of the Wildcats' top returners, having joined Nerbonne on last year's America East and NFHA All-Region First Teams.
