No. 9 BU Blanks Colgate, 9-0, with Record-Breaking Second Half

BOSTON – The ninth-ranked Boston University field hockey team shook off a scoreless opening half with a record-breaking second half en route to a 9-0 victory over Colgate in the Patriot League opener on Saturday afternoon at New Balance Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • BU broke a school record for goals in a half, putting nine on the board after halftime after all 12 of its shots on goal in the first half were saved.
  • Sophomore Ally Hammel had a career-high six points, recording two goals and two assists.
  • Sophomore Allie Doggett opened the scoring to provide the eventual game-winner while seniors Taylor Blood, Sara Martineau, Amanda Cassera and Hester van der Laan and juniors Allie Renzi and Grace Boston each scored a goal. 
  • Senior Madeline McClain assisted on three straight goals in a span of 7:26 and junior Kali Shumock picked up a pair of helpers. Blood and Martineau each chipped in with an assist.
  • Senior Cammy Jensen and sophomore Kathleen Keegan put together their second consecutive combined shutout. Neither netminder faced a shot on goal.
  • Colgate goalkeeper Maria Krull turned in an impressive 17-save performance and stopped the first 14 shots she faced. 
  • Four of BU's goals came off corners.
  • After setting up Doggett's goal to get BU on the board at 42:31, Hammel took a direct insert from Shumock off a corner and drilled it home from the top of the circle at 49:29.
  • Renzi notched her third goal of the year off an impressive effort where took a pass from van der Laan and followed her own rebound before slipping a shot past Krull in the 55th minute.
  • Just moments after Renzi's tally, Hammel scored another corner goal with assists going to Blood and Shumock.
  • Blood notched her goal in the 59th minute off a corner with a shot from the right side following a pass by Hammel.
  • McClain came off the bench and made an immediate impact, setting up Boston for a one-timer at the left post in the 61st minute before assisting on tallies by Martineau and Cassera in the 68th and 69th minutes, respectively.
  • With one second left in regulation, van der Laan created the 9-0 final when she dove in front of the goal for a tip-in to finish off a perfect give-and-go with Martineau. 

GAME NOTES

  • The win finished off a perfect 5-0 homestand for the Terriers.
  • BU outshot Colgate 36-2, holding an 18-1 advantage in each half, and earned 12 corners while allowing only one.
  • The Terriers matched last season's 9-0 win at Colgate and are now 6-1 all-time against the Raiders.
  • BU has now won nine straight home games and 11 straight Patriot League contests.
  • McClain had two career assists before registering three on Saturday.
  • Jensen lowered her goals-against average to 1.04.
  • BU's seven-game win streak is its longest since reeling off eight straight victories in 2005.

NEXT UP

  • BU hits the road on Friday (Sept. 23) to continue Patriot League play with a visit to Lafayette.
  • Friday's game, which starts at 7 p.m., will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.
