No. 8 Terriers Fall to No. 7 Brown in Season Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –
The No. 8 Boston University men's rowing team opened its spring season against No. 7 Brown on Saturday and lost the annual Michalson Cup race on the Seekonk River.
 
Brown regained the Michalson Cup with a win in the varsity eight race, finishing with a time of  5:28.41, ahead of the Terriers who finished with a time of 5:33.99. The Bears also won the second varsity, third varsity and fourth varsity eight races to sweep the Terriers on the day and avenge last year's sweep by BU in eights races on the Charles River.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Varsity Eight
In the varsity eight race, No. 7 Brown jumped out early and held a five-seat lead at the 500m mark. The No. 8 Terriers, coxed by senior Justin Goucher and stroked by graduate student Ole Henrik Bang-Andreasen, could not cut into the Bears' lead as Brown extended it to a full length at the 1000m mark and defeated BU by open water 5:28.41 to 5:33.99 to regain the Michalson Cup.
 
Second Varsity Eight
The 2V, coxed by junior Sean Dooling and stroked by sophomore Travis Kennedy, fell behind Brown by three seats over the first 500 meters. Brown extended it to open water but BU fought back and cut it to a length over the final 500 but could not catch Brown who won with a time of 5:39.40 while BU finished in 5:42.22.
 
Third Varsity Eight
The 3V, coxed junior Jeanne Garner and stroked by sophomore Theodore Thun, jumped out to an early lead and held it throughout the first 1000m. The Bears caught the Terriers over the third 500 meters and pulled ahead by a half length with 500 to go. The Terriers could not cut into the lead and fell to the Bears 5:50.03 to 5:52.89.
 
Fourth Varsity Eight
In the only three-boat race of the day, the 4V, coxed by freshman Chloe Jacobs and stroked by junior Andrew Dellechiaie, took on Brown's 4V and 5V boats. The Terriers pulled ahead by three seats over Brown's 4V in the first half of the race and was ahead of Brown's 5V by open water. Brown's 4V closed over the second half of the race and pulled ahead by a half length over the final 500 meters to win the race with a time of 5:56.64. BU finished with a time of 5:59.63, well ahead of the Brown 5V (6:30.37).     
 
NEXT UP
The Terriers next take on arch rival Northeastern on April 7th and will look to win the Arlett Cup for the fourth-consecutive year.
