DURHAM, N.H. -Â Looking to claim a season-opening tournament title for the third straight year, the No. 19 Boston University field hockey team will take on New Hampshire in the championship game of the Wildcat Classic on Sunday (Aug. 26) at 2 p.m.
Â
The two teams have alternated as hosts for this tournament since 2015. BU topped UNH, 4-3, in the 2016 Wildcat Classic title game before edging the Wildcats, 1-0, in last year's Terrier Classic finale.
Â
The Terriers kicked off this year's tournament on Friday with a 4-1 win over rival Northeastern. Freshman
Casey Thompson, playing in her home state, tallied a goal and an assist in her collegiate debut. Senior
Ally Hammel opened the scoring while sophomore
Ailsa Connolly and senior
Kara Enoch each added a goal.
Â
UNH went 9-12 during the 2017 season, reaching the America East title game before falling to Stanford. Katie Audino returns for her senior season after leading last year's squad in points (24) and goals (10). Sophomore Bloem van den Brekel had a strong rookie season in 2017 with 23 points and a team-best nine assists.
Â
The Wildcats opened their 2018 campaign on Friday with a 3-2 triumph over Massachusetts in the second semifinal.
Â
Junior Bailey Fanikos gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead late in the first half before the Minutewomen scored goals just over a minute apart to take over the lead. Freshman Tia Raspante tied up the game in the 58th minute before fellow rookie Finn Caron notched the game winner with 7:27 left in regulation.
Â
The Terriers and Wildcats have met 43 times with BU holding a 22-18-3 advantage in the series.
