HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England – Highlighted by two victories in the Temple Cup Challenge races, the Boston University men's rowing varsity eight boat advanced to the quarterfinals of the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta this week. The Terriers' V8 defeated boats from Exeter University on Wednesday and the University of Pennsylvania on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals.

On Friday, the Terriers took on perennial British Universities Sport Association Champion, Oxford Brookes University. The V8, coxed by William Mulhall and stroked by Elliott Jenkins, fell behind Brookes at the start but stayed close and were within four seats over the first half of the race. Oxford Brookes began to stretch their lead over the second half of the race and held the lead down the stretch despite the Terriers' best effort, beating BU by a full length to advance to Saturday's semifinals.

"Although disappointed to be knocked out of the regatta - we had our best race of the year," said head men's rowing coach Thomas Bohrer. "We built speed from the IRA in a new line-up and today faced the favorite to win the event. We posted some of the fastest times of the day so we are leaving here knowing we had our best race. If we were in a different bracket we may have moved on another day, but this is Henley. This has been a great experience for our team. We got faster in the last 5 weeks, the racing was intense, and this Henley environment is like no other."

On Day 1 of the regatta, the BU varsity eight had an excellent performance, defeating Exeter University by open water to advance to Day 2. In their second race of the regatta on Thursday, the Terriers' V8  defeated the University of Pennsylvania by 2/3 of a length to move on to quarterfinals of the Temple Cup competition.

The Terriers' V4 boat concluded competition at Henley after Day 1 when they faced off against a very tough draw in the University of London. Stroked by Theo Warren and coxed by Chloe Jacobs, the Terriers 4+ kept the race very close over the first half but fell behind by a length over the final 500 meters and were knocked out by UL.

Races at the Henley Royal Regatta are head-to-head knock out competitions with the winning boat moving on to the next round and the losing boat being eliminated. The Henley was first held in 1839 and has been held annually ever since, except during the two World Wars, over the first weekend in July.
