February 26, 2020

FAIRFIELD, Conn. –  Highlighted by a 7-1 run between the first and second half, the Boston University women's lacrosse team picked up its first road win of the season with a 14-12 triumph at Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon at Conway Field.

Mackenzie Howe paced the BU (3-2) offense with a season-high three goals and was one of three Terriers to record three points, as Maddie MacMaster and Kailey Conry each tallied one goal and two assists. Claire Gola (1g, 1a) and Makenzie Irvine (2g) also had multi-point afternoons. Howe and Conry scored the final two goals of the game to break a 12-12 deadlock, with Conry's final marker coming with just 27 seconds remaining in regulation.

Kennady Smith earned the win in net, making five saves over 46 minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gola spun off a defender to net her first career goal and even the score at 1-1 just under six minutes into action.
  • Fairfield caught fire with three straight goals in a three-minute span, but MacMaster tallied back-to-back strikes within a 25-second period to put the Terriers within one.
  • The Stags put up another hot streak, using their transition offense to double up BU, 6-3.
  • Ava Barry jab-stepped her way through the crease before Lexi Lewis converted on a free position shot 17 ticks later to make it a one-goal game again, 6-5, with 12:41 left in the half.
  • Howe put in a rebound right in front of the cage, while Conry found Irvine for a one-time finish to cap a 4-0 run and give BU its first lead, 8-7, with 8:19 to play in the first.
  • Following nearly seven scoreless minutes, Fairfield knotted the score on a free position chance, but Nicole Foringer split a pair of defenders and zipped in her first goal of the season to give BU an 8-7 edge at the break.
  • Lauren Kaye kept the Terriers' foot on the gas to start the second half, ringing the back of the net 44 seconds into the stanza to push the lead to 9-7.
  • The Conry-Irvine connection gave BU a three-goal advantage, though the Stags reeled off a 4-0 streak to go back ahead by one with 20 minutes to play.
  • Howe darted to the cage to draw it even at 11-11 until Conry followed two minutes later by scooping up a ground ball outside the crease and slotting it past the keeper, regaining BU's grip on the scoreboard at 12-11.
  • Fairfield tied it up at the nine-minute mark, though Howe wasn't done attacking the cage as she struck again to regain the lead, 13-12, with 5:30 to play.
