Harvard Edges Men's Soccer, 2-1

ALLSTON, Mass. – Competing in a mid-week non-conference matchup, the Boston University men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at Harvard on Tuesday night.

All three goals were scored during the first 23 minutes of action, as the Crimson improved to 4-3-2. The Terriers (1-8-1) forced a diving save in the final minute of regulation but were unable to convert on the ensuing corner kick before the buzzer sounded for their fifth one-goal loss.

Missing the first eight contests due to injury, sophomore and 2020 Patriot League All-Conference honoree Andrew Rent netted his first goal of the season to lead the offense, while classmate Andrew Wike recorded a personal-best eight saves, including one on a second-half penalty kick attempt.

"Tonight we showed some good fight," said head coach Kevin Nylen. "We got to play a lot of guys, and although it wasn't the result we wanted, sure proud of the guys for battling for the entire 90 minutes tonight. We're onto American now."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Crimson quickly scored at 3:10 when James Fahmy played a long ball from Harvard's side of the field toward the BU box to help set up Martin Vician's goal.
  • Vician had gotten past the BU backline and was able to beat Wike for the ball and loft a chip shot over the diving Wike for the empty netter.
  • Rent tied the game 10 minutes later by rifling a shot from the top of the box inside the left post after his service pass attempt was blocked right back to him.
  • Harvard struck again at 22:04, as Alessandro Arlotti tapped in a cross from Willem Ebbinge, who managed to keep the ball in play alongside the goal line and send it past the diving Wike's outstretched arms.
  • BU earned a pair of corners in the 37th minute with the first one from freshman Kevin Torres setting up a dangerous shot attempt by graduate student Peter Kargbo
  • The Crimson's backline got the block and then cleared the ensuing corner.
  • Wike earned three saves during the final five minutes to keep the deficit at 2-1.
  • The Crimson nearly added a third goal in the second half when Wike committed a foul trying to clear the ball on a tackle.
  • Wike though responded with an impressive diving save to his right on Vician's low grounder at 50:34.
  • BU came right back with a flurry of shots that saw Harvard earn a save against Kargbo and block against freshman Brian Hernandez.
  • The Terriers had one last gasp in the final minute, but Harvard got the save and clearing on the corner to preserve the win.
GAME NOTES
  • Rent became the fourth Terrier to net a goal this fall and has now scored a goal in three of his six career appearances after starting all four contests in the spring.

  • Gianluca Trofa tallied four saves for the Crimson, who claimed a 20-13 advantage in shots and 6-4 lead in corners.
  • Sophomore Eitan Rosen led BU with three shot attempts.
