Lafayette Edges Men's Soccer on 89th-Minute Score, 3-2

BOSTON – In a back-and-forth battle, the Boston University men's soccer team came up short to Lafayette, 3-2, on Saturday night at Nickerson Field.

The Leopards (4-0, 4-0 PL) escaped with their fourth straight win on an 89th goal, as the Terriers (1-1, 1-1 PL) suffered their first loss of the season.

Sophomore Ronaldo Marshall led the BU offense with an assist and goal to push his team lead to five points on the season. Both Carter Houlihan and Hale Lombard also had three points each for the Leopards.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freshman Andrew Wike made his first of four saves on a header shot from Marcos Kitromilides in the second minute.
  • Wike made another one during a scramble in the box following back-to-back Lafayette corners at 6:07.
  • The Terriers got on the scoreboard first at 20:40 when Alex Sutton made a diving save on Marshall's shot attempt and freshman Andrew Rent pounced on the loose ball for the quick strike at the far post.
  • The Leopards scored twice in the final five minutes of the first half, starting with Lombard's finish off Houlihan's cross at 40:35.
  • David Mizrahi headed in Marcos Kitromilides' corner with nine seconds left for the 2-1 advantage.
  • BU netted the equalizer in the 60th minute after drawing an indirect free kick inside the box.
  • Freshman Eitan Rosen made a quick touch on the ball, and Marshall fired a shot through Lafayette's wall toward the right post for the equalizer.
  • The game became more physical as the night went on with 33 total fouls called, and the Leopards made the Terriers pay on the final one.
  • Sutton placed a long free kick into the box, and Lombard was able to get a foot on the ball to help Houlihan win the scramble and strike quickly for the 3-2 win.
GAME NOTES
  • Lafayette finished with a 15-11 advantage in shots and 9-2 lead in corner kicks.
  • Both Wike and Sutton had four saves apiece.
  • BU dropped to 4-3-1 all-time in the series following last year's 2-1 road loss with the contest.
  • The matchup featured the most combind goals in a game between the two teams with BU pulling out a 3-1 home win in 2014 en route to the PL regular season title.
NEXT UP: Holy Cross
  • The Terriers will next visit the Crusaders on Thursday, April 1, for a 6 p.m. start.
  • BU is 13-3-1 all-time in the series with a 4-0-0 road record that includes a 1-0 win in 2018.
  • The Crusaders avenged that loss with a 1-0 road win of their own in 2019.
