BOSTONÂ - The Boston University field hockey team will open its 2021 season on Friday (Aug. 27) when it hosts Monmouth in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Game time at New Balance Field is set for noon.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- The Terriers were picked third in the Patriot League Preseason Poll behind American and defending champion Bucknell.
- In the condensed 2020-21 season, BU posted an undefeated regular season at 4-0 and advanced to the PL title game before falling in overtime to Bucknell.
- Senior Miya Denison and sophomore Thalia Steenssens were both named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team.
- Rebecca Janes returns for her senior year after tying for the team lead last season in both points (11) and assists (3).
- Both goalkeepers are back from last season as junior Caroline Kelly and sophomore Kate Thomason combined for a 1.30 goals-against average and a .652 in 2020-21.
- Sally Starr enters her 41st season at the helm of the program, breaking the department record for head-coaching tenure, previously held by Jack Parker (men's ice hockey).Â
SCOUTING MONMOUTH
- Like BU, Monmouth won a regular-season championship last season before falling in overtime in its conference championship game.Â
- The Hawks were selected first in the America East Preseason Poll, collecting five first-place votes to edge Maine by a single point.Â
- Monmouth returns junior Aylin Aufenacker and senior Annick van Lange, who combined for 39 points a season ago while each tallying seven goals.Â
- Kate O'Hogen posted a conference-best 1.13 goals-against average in the cage last season as a junior.
- The Hawks will host Northeastern on Sunday for their home opener.
