Women's Basketball Returns Home To Face Lafayette

BOSTON – The Boston University women's basketball program looks to bounce back in Beantown when it hosts Lafayette on Wednesday (Jan. 26). Opening tip is slated for 6 p.m.
 
The Terriers aim for their seventh win in Patriot League play, and their sixth consecutive win at home. A victory would mark BU's first six-game, regular season home winning streak since it collected 10 consecutive wins between the 2019-20 and 2020-21 campaigns. The Terriers are 16-2 vs. Patriot League foes at Case Gym since the start of the 2019-20 season.
 
Lafayette looks to capture its third win in its last four road games as well as snap its three-game losing streak. With a .500 record in the Patriot League, the Leopards sit in sixth place, four slots behind the Terriers, who share a league-best 6-1 PL record with Holy Cross.
 
TERRIER TIDBITS
  • BU saw its six-game winning streak come to an end in its last matchup, falling 79-67 at defending PL champion Lehigh on Jan. 22.
  • The Terriers trailed by as much as 16 points late in the third quarter, but came as close as four points, 62-58, in the final frame before the Mountain Hawks pulled away.
  • Junior Sydney Johnson set a career-high with 11 field goals for a game-high 24 points. Twenty of her points came after halftime.
  • Classmate Maren Durant scored a career-best 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting, adding eight rebounds.
  • With those performances, four different Terriers have scored 20 or more points in seven instances this year. Johnson has four to pace the team, along with Durant, junior Liz Shean, and freshman Alex Giannaros.
  • During Patriot League play, the Terriers lead the PL in scoring average (69.3), scoring margin (+12.1), field goal percentage (.423), rebounds per game (42.3), defensive boards per game (30.3), rebounding margin (+6.9), and blocks per game (5.0).
  • Individually, Johnson is third in the PL with 16.9 points per game, and Giannaros is fourth at 15 points per game.
  • Sophomore Caitlin Weimar is 12th at 12.2 points per game, and fifth at 10.2 rebounds per contest.
  • Durant is sixth with 10 rebounds per contest.
  • Giannaros leads the PL with 2.6 three-pointers per game on 43.3 percent shooting.
  • Johnson has already set a season-best in points scored, having reached 228 this year in 15 games. Previously, she scored 227 in 30 games as a freshman.
  • BU is 7-2 in Beantown this season, averaging 65.9 points per game in Case Gym. In those seven wins, the average margin of victory is 17.4 points.
 
SCOUTING THE LEOPARDS
  • Lafayette is 7-9 on the season, and 3-3 in the Patriot League. The Leopards had joined the Terriers in winning its first three league games, but have lost their last three contests.
  • Back on Jan. 22, Lafayette dropped a home matchup with Colgate, 49-47. That game marked the Raiders' first PL win of the year.
  • This season, the Leopards lead the Patriot League with a .365 field goal percentage defense. In PL play, they've allowed league-lows of 49 points per game and a .327 field goal percentage defense.
  • Lafayette has two players averaging 10 or more points: leading scorer Jessica Booth (11.8 points per game) and Makayla Andrews (11.1 PPG).
  • Naomi Ganpo paces the Patriot League and ranks 24th in the nation with 2.19 blocks per game, totaling 35 on the campaign.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Wednesday marks the 27th all-time meeting between BU and Lafayette.
  • BU sports a 17-9 advantage in the rivalry, having won three straight and five of the last six matchups. BU has also won the past three meetings in Boston.
  • The series began in 1985. The Terriers won eight of the first nine duels.
  • The last matchup took place in the Patriot League quarterfinals back on Mar. 7, 2021. BU turned in a 74-68 win thanks to a 13-for-22 shooting performance on three-pointers.
  • Johnson led the team with 19 points and a career-best nine assists, while Pina and Durant each scored 17 points.
  • In the last nine games between the two programs (favoring BU 5-4), the average margin of victory is four points. Five of those results have featured margins of three or fewer points.
