Eighteen Former Terriers Named to NHL Opening Night Rosters

October 12, 2022

BOSTON - Eighteen former Boston University men's ice hockey standouts were named to NHL opening night rosters for the 2022-23 season.

That number is tied for the third most in all of college hockey. In addition to the 18 skaters, BU boasts the most alumni serving as NHL head coaches, with new San Jose Sharks head coach David Quinn joining John Hynes (Nashville Predators) and Mike Sullivan (Pittsburgh Penguins) behind an NHL bench.

Quinn and Hynes actually coached against one another in the first two games of the NHL season, with the Predators and Sharks facing off in Prague. Dante Fabbro and Nashville earned a two-game sweep of San Jose, with Nick Bonino and Matt Nieto skating as linemates for the Sharks to open the year. Jack Eichel was the first Terrier to score a goal this season, doing so during Vegas' win at Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

Boston once again leads all NHL teams with four Terriers on its roster, including first-year Bruin AJ Greer. The Sharks (Bonino, Nieto) and the Ducks (Kevin Shattenkirk, Trevor Zegras) each have two Terriers apiece.
