BOSTON – Hosting a Patriot League tournament contest as the top seed for the first time since 2014, the Boston University men's soccer team will welcome No. 4 Colgate to Nickerson Field Tuesday evening with semifinal action set to begin at 6 p.m.
The Terriers captured the program's second PL regular season title behind 22 points, two more than a Loyola Maryland squad that is hosting No. 3 Lafayette at the same time in the other semifinal matchup. The Raiders finished fourth at 14 points and opened the tournament with a 2-0 home victory over No. 5 Navy.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU is making back to back PL semifinal appearances for the first time since the Terriers advanced to the final in 2014 and came up short in the 2015 semis en route to an NCAA at-large bid.
- The Terriers have been eliminated via penalty kicks in each of their last four PL tournament appearances, suffering at home a 9-8 heartbreak to eventual champion Navy in 2022 and a 5-4 defeat to Army in 2018.
- BU is entering a tournament as the top seed for the 11th time and owns a 10-6-2 all-time record. The Terriers hoisted the trophy in 2008, 2004, 1994 and 1993.
- Overall, the Terriers are 10-6-4 all-time in the semifinals, last winning in 2014 as the top seed against Army in overtime.
- BU finished the regular season unbeaten at home (6-0-2) for the first time since 1994 with PL wins over Loyola Maryland (3-1), Navy (4-1), Holy Cross (3-0) and Lehigh (2-0) alongside a 0-0 draw against Colgate.
- Six Terriers earned All-PL honors for the second consecutive year on Friday prior to the start of the tournament with senior Francesco Montali (Goalkeeper of the Year) and classmate Griffin Roach (Defensive Player of the Year) repeating as major award winners.
- Senior Eitan Rosen claimed BU's first PL Offensive Player of the Year award since 2014 after tallying seven of his team-high eight goals in conference play. He's added two assists for 18 points.
- Two-time All-PL First Team honoree and graduate student Colin Innes owns seven assists alongside two goals for 11 points, while two-time All-PL Third Team member and senior Andrew Rent has three goals with three assists. Two-time All-PL Second Team member and graduate student Quinn Matulis has eight points off three goals and two assists.
- Montali has started 15 games at net, posting a .739 save percentage and 0.80 goals against average. He's been supported by a backline that includes Roach.
- The Terriers are averaging 1.6 more shots per game (10.8-9.2) despite opponents owning a 78-62 advantage in corners.
SCOUTING COLGATE
- The Raiders are 3-5-2 on the road this season with a 3-0-2 mark against PL competition. They posted wins at Holy Cross (1-0), American (2-1) and Lafayette (1-0) with draws against BU (0-0) and Army (1-1).
- Colgate is 5-1-0 over the last six games with a 7-3 advantage in goals and split against Navy.
- Aidan Davock leads the Raiders with seven goals and two assists after earning a brace in the PL quarterfinals vs. the Midshipmen. Connor Cates owns a team-high three assists.
- Andrew Cooke has 12 of 13 games at net, posting a .730 save percentage and 1.34 goals against average.
- Overall, opponents have been nearly doubling Colgate in shots, 12.5-6.5, with an 89-61 lead in corners.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Terriers are 9-4-3 all-time against Colgate in a series dating back to 1979.
- BU is 5-2-2 all-time at home with a three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1) after the Raiders won in 2017, 4-0.
- Back in September, BU posted a 16-4 advantage in shots with the Raiders earning three saves to keep the game scoreless.
- The teams are meeting in the PL tournament for the first time.
