BOSTON – The Boston University field hockey team will kick off its 2023 season on Friday (Aug. 25) when it hosts Michigan State for a noon contest. It will mark the first game at New Balance Field since 2021 as the facility underwent a full renovation.

Admission is free for fans, and 2023 team schedule posters will be available at the marketing table while supplies last.

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • BU, the defending Patriot League regular-season champion, was selected to finish second in the league's preseason poll and received three first-place votes.
  • Junior Payton Anderson was named the 2023 Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and was joined on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team by sophomore Martu Coulo and seniors Thalia Steenssens and Rachel Borzymowski.
  • Anderson received the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year award last year as a junior while Coulo received PL Rookie of the Year honors.
  • Borzymowski, the 2022 Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year, returned to the team for a fifth year.
  • The Terriers return four of their top five scorers from last season.
  • BU has nine home games during the 2023 regular season including a six-game homestand that starts on Sept. 30.
  • This year's squad features 10 newcomers as nine freshmen have joined the program and sophomore Caroline O'Brien transferred from Wake Forest.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN STATE
  • The Spartans are coming off a 2022 season in which they posted a 9-9 record including a 1-7 mark in conference play.
  • Junior Ellie Rutherford and fifth-years Hannah Jarvie and Celina Riccardo were named to the Preseason Big Ten Players to Watch list earlier this week.
  • Rutherford (4g, 2a), Jarvie (4g, 2a), Riccardo (2g, 6a) and seniors Lulu Fulton (5g) and Emma O'Neill (4g, 2a) all tallied 10 points last season.
  • Neither of the Spartans' two goalkeepers on their roster have played in a collegiate game as Monique Jardell played every minute in cage in 2022 as a fifth-year senior.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Michigan State leads the all-time series, 4-2, but the Terriers won the most recent meeting in 2011 by a score of 3-1.
